College of Business Awards<br />

*The following is a list of the current<br />

scholarships. Most are used to underwrite<br />

<strong>Butler</strong> <strong>University</strong> financial aid programs and<br />

cannot be applied for directly unless otherwise<br />

indicated.<br />

General Scholarships<br />

Sharon L. Bassett Scholarship. <strong>Butler</strong> Trustee<br />

Dennis Bassett created this scholarship as a<br />

memorial to his late wife, Sharon, who died<br />

after courageously battling breast cancer. It is<br />

his hope and desire that recipients of this award<br />

consider giving of their time and resources to<br />

support causes related to cancer education, support<br />

and research. Recipients are encouraged to<br />

volunteer with the Sharon L. Bassett Foundation,<br />

Inc. or other organizations or activities<br />

supported by the Foundation. The recipient<br />

should be a full time student in good standing<br />

within the College of Business.<br />

James E. and Martha Ann (Forsythe) Bettis<br />

Endowed Scholarship. This fund was established<br />

by the family and many friends to honor<br />

James E. Bettis, Class of 1940. Mr. Bettis was<br />

highly respected for his work ethic, integrity<br />

and dedication to servicing during a long and<br />

distinguished career in insurance, investments<br />

and financial services. When his wife, Martha<br />

Forsythe Bettis passed away October 1, 2009,<br />

family members renamed this scholarship to<br />

honor both James and Martha. This scholarship<br />

benefits deserving full-time students in the<br />

College of Business who have achieved a grade<br />

point average of 3.0 or higher.<br />

Omar S. and Harriet D. Bruner Jr.<br />

Scholarship. This endowment, established in<br />

1983 by Omar Bruner Jr., Class of 1948, and<br />

his late first wife Harriet, provides scholarships<br />

to students majoring in business administration,<br />

economics or pre-law who need financial<br />

assistance.<br />

<strong>Butler</strong> Business Scholars Financial<br />

Assistance Scholarship. Endowed by sisters<br />

Dr. Karel Updyke, Karen J. Caulkins and<br />

Kristine J. Caulkins, this scholarship is awarded<br />

and maintained in accordance with the criteria<br />

established for the <strong>Butler</strong> Business Scholars<br />

Program. It is awarded in an amount of no<br />

less than $1,000 per year.<br />

Julia Stojkic Carpenter Endowed Scholaship.<br />

Julia Carpenter graduated from <strong>Butler</strong> in 1985<br />

with a degree in Business Administration. She<br />

was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma, a<br />

board member of the House Board of Kappa<br />

Kappa Gamma, and a member of the Alumni<br />

Board at <strong>Butler</strong>. This award will be given to<br />

a student enrolled full-time in the College of<br />

Business.<br />

Cooke Family Endowed Scholarship. <strong>Butler</strong><br />

Medal recipient John D. Cooke, Class of 1962,<br />

and Judy A. Cooke and their sons, J. Christopher<br />

Cooke and Brian F. Cooke, established this<br />

fund to salute student potential, measured not<br />

by grade point average but through a combination<br />

of academic success, contribution<br />

to the <strong>University</strong> and their community, and<br />

demonstrated leadership capacity. It is awarded<br />

to a College of Business student with preferences<br />

given in the following priority order:<br />

financial need; academic growth during the first<br />

two years at <strong>Butler</strong> while receiving little or no<br />

merit scholarship support during these years;<br />

incoming freshmen who exhibit exceptional<br />

leadership ability in high school but will not<br />

receive academic merit scholarship aid; student<br />

athletes; members of Phi Delta Theta fraternity<br />

and Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority; and students<br />

of parents injured or killed while serving<br />

in the military, police or fire department (or<br />

students who were injured in similar public<br />

service).<br />

William J. Davey Scholarship. As a means<br />

of expressing appreciation for his educational<br />

experience at <strong>Butler</strong> <strong>University</strong>, William J.<br />

Davey, Class of 1947, and his wife Bernice<br />

Refvem Davey provided for a scholarship fund,<br />

stipulating that the recipient be in the College<br />

of Business, with special consideration given<br />

to those who express a desire to enter the<br />

insurance business upon graduation.<br />

Ernest and Belle A. Davidson Endowed<br />

Scholarship. Preference will be given to<br />

Caucasian undergraduates enrolled in the<br />

College of Business. The scholarship is to be<br />

awarded to financially needy students, but is<br />

limited to one-half or less of tuition cost. The<br />

recipient will have a cumulative grade point<br />

average of 3.0.<br />
