Kenneth Wood Scholarship. This fund was<br />

established by friends and family of Kenneth<br />

Wood, who had a long history of devoted<br />

service to his pharmacy profession. The scholarship<br />

is to be awarded to a deserving student.<br />

Lectania Newcomb Wright Memorial<br />

Scholarship. A deep and abiding interest in<br />

the welfare of <strong>Butler</strong> <strong>University</strong> and an earnest<br />

desire to provide meaningful assistance to <strong>Butler</strong><br />

students for generations to come prompted<br />

John S. Wright, a botanist with Eli Lilly and<br />

Company, to establish this scholarship fund for<br />

young women in memory of his wife Lectania,<br />

<strong>Butler</strong> Class of 1892.<br />

Young Alumni Book Fund. Young alumni<br />

and the members of the Young Alumni Board<br />

established this fund to provide a stipend to<br />

purchase books to a student in good standing<br />

entering his or her senior year.<br />

Zay Legacy Scholarship. This scholarship was<br />

established by Thomas Fischer, Class of 1975,<br />

and Maribeth Zay Fischer, Class of 1974, in<br />

honor of Zay family members and their relatives<br />

by marriage who attended or graduated<br />

from <strong>Butler</strong>, and in honor of their descendents,<br />

who they hope will continue this connection to<br />

and support of <strong>Butler</strong>. Recipients should have<br />

at least a 3.5 grade point average or rank in the<br />

top 20 percent of their high school or college<br />

class. Applicants’ special talents and leadership<br />

abilities are important considerations. The<br />

scholarship is renewable.<br />

Walter Roy Zimmerman Scholarship. <strong>Butler</strong><br />

parent Sandra Ruby established this scholarship<br />

to honor her uncle. Preference is given to fulltime<br />

<strong>Butler</strong> students with financial need from<br />

the greater Tri-County area of Detroit, Michigan,<br />

where Mr. Zimmerman lived his entire<br />

life. Further preference is given to students with<br />

a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.<br />

Sciences Awards<br />

*The following is a list of the current<br />

scholarships. Most are used to underwrite<br />

<strong>Butler</strong> <strong>University</strong> financial aid programs and<br />

cannot be applied for directly unless otherwise<br />

indicated.<br />

General Scholarships<br />

George Hooper Cornelius Sr. and Beulah<br />

Stockdale Cornelius Memorial Scholarship.<br />

As a tribute to the Corneliuses’ interest in<br />

<strong>Butler</strong> and their contributions to the community,<br />

family members established this memorial<br />

scholarship for the benefit of deserving sophomore,<br />

junior and senior students. Recipients<br />

must meet prescribed academic standards, have<br />

financial need and demonstrate high morals<br />

and good citizenship on the <strong>Butler</strong> campus.<br />

Margaret O’Neil Culbertson Scholarship.<br />

This fund was established by a bequest from<br />

the estate of Dr. Clyde Culbertson to honor the<br />

memory of his late wife, Margaret O’Neil Culbertson,<br />

Class of 1934. The scholarship is for<br />

students, who are in the College of Liberal Arts<br />

and Sciences or who, because of poor preparation,<br />

need special instruction to increase their<br />

skill level and who merit such assistance based<br />

on their personal qualifications.<br />

Patricia Hadley Fielder Scholarship. Patricia<br />

Fielder, Class of 1965, and her husband Frank<br />

established this scholarship in 1977 so students<br />

in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will<br />

be recognized with a financial award based on<br />

academic ability. The scholarship is intended<br />

to honor and support outstanding scholarship<br />

regardless of financial need.<br />

Edith Dockweiler Hughes Scholarship.<br />

John D. Hughes, through a bequest in his will,<br />

established an endowed scholarship in memory<br />

of his mother, Edith Dockweiler Hughes. A<br />

1905 graduate of <strong>Butler</strong> College, Mrs. Hughes<br />

firmly believed that individuals, who participated<br />

in the activities of their community, church<br />

and school, doing all they could to help, would<br />

have no time for complaints. Mrs. Hughes<br />

died in 1947, and it is her son’s wish that this<br />

scholarship provide assistance to students who<br />

have demonstrated scholastic achievement and<br />

leadership potential. A scholarship committee<br />

appointed by the dean of the College of Liberal<br />

Arts and Sciences selects recipients.<br />

Dorothy Lynn Scholarships for the Liberal<br />

Arts. Dorothy Black Lynn, Class of 1923, was<br />

a civic leader and philanthropist who received<br />

the <strong>Butler</strong> Medal in 1975. Her lifetime of<br />

support to <strong>Butler</strong> <strong>University</strong> culminated with<br />

a gift from a trust created by her estate, which<br />
