Fandom: Using qualitative research methods<br />
(data collection, field work, interviewing),<br />
students will explore the relationship of audiences<br />

MRC468, Women and Rock: Within a<br />
feminist studies framework, this course explores<br />
women’s roles in the development of music<br />
within Western culture and more specifically<br />
rock ‘n’ roll. While considering the intersections<br />
of gender with race, class and sexual orientation,<br />
we will also critically examine the current state<br />
of women in rock. Prerequisite: Junior or senior<br />

class is a critical study of mediated sports and<br />
their relationship to society. The class will<br />
examine the major issues and controversies<br />
surrounding sports and their cultural impact.<br />

MRC481, Technologies of the Body: As the<br />
body is always a site of power relations, it can<br />
be “read” to express a particular culture’s desires<br />
and anxieties. We will examine the technologies<br />
that we employ to alter, change and “perfect”<br />
the human body in order to meet the demands<br />
and desires of contemporary life. Prerequisite:<br />
Junior or senior standing or permission of<br />

MRC482, Voices of Dissent and Social<br />
Change: This course explores the communication<br />
strategies that activists have used to<br />
challenge the political and social injustices<br />
of their times. Case studies include women’s<br />
suffrage, civil rights, free speech and antiglobalization<br />
movements. Prerequisite: Junior<br />
or senior standing or permission of instructor.<br />

Capstone: This capstone course is an opportunity<br />
for MRC majors to synthesize previous<br />
course work and to integrate knowledge from<br />
both media studies and rhetoric in a culminating<br />
experience. Prerequisite: MRC majors with<br />
senior standing or permission of the instructor.<br />

MRC486, 487, 488, Apprenticeship: Students<br />
work with faculty members on their teaching or<br />
research. In teaching apprenticeships, students<br />
work with the professor in the development<br />
and discussion of the classroom experience. In<br />
research apprenticeships, students work with<br />
the faculty mentor on his/her current research.<br />

of a particular topic in the field of media,<br />

students the opportunity for a supervised educational<br />
work experience in a setting pertinent<br />

opportunity for qualified students to pursue a<br />
