Canfield “Bud” Boone Memorial Scholarship<br />

for Excellence in Education. Buddy Boone,<br />

Class of 1970, was killed in the terrorist attacks<br />

on the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001. He was<br />

promoted to colonel posthumously. His wife<br />

Linda Shackleford Boone, Class of 1970, M.S.<br />

’75 and her family established this scholarship<br />

in his memory and honor. The financial aid<br />

office administers the scholarship to benefit<br />

an undergraduate student in the College of<br />

Education.<br />

Anthony and Gertrude Bowen Scholarship.<br />

This fund was established to provide scholarships<br />

in the College of Education to recognize<br />

outstanding individuals in teacher education.<br />

Anthony Bowen, who started one of the first<br />

automobile dealerships in Indiana, attended<br />

<strong>Butler</strong> <strong>University</strong>. His wife, Gertrude Hinson<br />

Bowen, was a graduate of Madame Blaker’s<br />

Teachers College, which merged in 1929 with<br />

<strong>Butler</strong>’s education department to become the<br />

College of Education. Their foster daughter,<br />

Corrine Welling, was a faculty member at <strong>Butler</strong><br />

for many years; a scholarship in the College<br />

of Liberal Arts and Sciences was established in<br />

her honor.<br />

Jerry L. Burris Educational Leadership<br />

Scholarship. This scholarship provides support<br />

to students enrolled in the Experiential Program<br />

for Preparing School Principals (EPPSP). Preference<br />

is given to a student who exemplifies<br />

the qualities of leadership, community service<br />

and professional excellence and who also<br />

demonstrates financial need. The student will<br />

maintain a 3.0 grade point average.<br />

Caroldine O. Bussell and Mary Blythe<br />

Osborn Memorial Scholarship Fund.<br />

A bequest from the estate of Blythe Osborn<br />

M.S. 1943 created this fund in her memory<br />

and in memory of her sister Caroldine Osborn<br />

Bussell, Class of 1937. The Bussell-Osborn<br />

scholarships are awarded annually to undergraduate<br />

or graduate students who are preparing<br />

for or are advancing their careers<br />

in teaching.<br />

COE Faculty, Emeriti and Staff Scholarship.<br />

Established during the <strong>Butler</strong>Rising campaign,<br />

this scholarship was created to offer tuition<br />

assistance to a student who shows great promise<br />

as a future teacher but would not otherwise<br />

<strong>Butler</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

be able to afford enrollment in the College of<br />

Education. The scholarship is renewable for the<br />

following three academic years, provided the<br />

student remains eligible.<br />

Comer-Truax Endowed Scholarship.<br />

Established in 1991 through an estate gift from<br />

Lewis Truax, this scholarship is for students in<br />

the College of Education. It is named for Mr.<br />

Truax and his wife, Reva Comer, Class of 1952.<br />

Edith Bigelow Conlin Scholarship. Daniel J.<br />

Conlin established this award as a memorial<br />

to his wife and her love of education. Edith<br />

undertook the study of teacher education and<br />

a professional teaching career while sharing<br />

family responsibilities. The award is intended to<br />

motivate and encourage students who face similar<br />

responsibilities in the pursuit of a teaching<br />

career. Preference is given to students enrolled<br />

in elementary education and those female<br />

students who have dependent children.<br />

Catherine Hall Naugle Cook Scholarship.<br />

Catherine N. Cook, a 1949 graduate of the<br />

College of Education, established this scholarship<br />

in loving memory of her family. Preference<br />

is given to a woman who is preparing for a<br />

teaching career and who is in good standing<br />

with the <strong>University</strong>.<br />

Alice B. Cunningham Scholarship Fund.<br />

Born in 1902, Miss Cunningham was a 1941<br />

graduate of the College of Education. She<br />

established this fund in 1995 to provide scholarships<br />

for worthy students in education. The<br />

award is intended to encourage students who<br />

have demonstrated the capacity to achieve<br />

educational and professional goals and the<br />

initiative to seek opportunities to further<br />

their progress.<br />

Patricia C. Emerson Scholarship in Education.<br />

Pat Emerson, Class of 1952, established this<br />

scholarship to provide support to a <strong>Butler</strong><br />

student enrolled in the College of Education.<br />

Keith and Sarah Faller Endowed Scholarship.<br />

Keith and Sarah Faller are loyal and engaged<br />

alumni of <strong>Butler</strong> <strong>University</strong>. Keith Faller<br />

received his BS from COB 1971 and his MBA<br />

in 1978. Sarah Faller received her MBA from<br />

the COB 1990. This award goes to a student<br />

enrolled in the College of Education who<br />

graduated from a high school in Indiana. Preference<br />

will be given to students who graduated<br />

from IPS, <strong>University</strong> High School or Jasper<br />

High School. Preference will also be given to a
