John Newcomb Wright Memorial Scholarship.<br />
John S. Wright, a botanist with Eli Lilly<br />
and Company, and Lectania Newcomb Wright,<br />
Class of 1892, established this fund in memory<br />
of their son, a former <strong>Butler</strong> student who died<br />
at age 25. (There is a scholarship in Lectania<br />
Wright’s memory as well.) Preference is given<br />
to English or economics majors.<br />
Engineering<br />
ICUE America Inc. Engineering Endowed<br />
Scholarship. The donors wish to provide<br />
financial assistance to <strong>Butler</strong> students enrolled<br />
in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.<br />
Preference is given to an entering first-year<br />
student who has declared a major in engineering,<br />
with further preference given to mechanical<br />
engineering.<br />
ICUE America Inc. Engineering Field Project<br />
Fund. This fund was established by <strong>Butler</strong><br />
parent, Steven North and his business associates<br />
Jesse Miles and Keith Reinsmith to provide<br />
opportunities for engineering students to<br />
engage in special service/learning projects.<br />
Income from the fund may be used to support<br />
student research projects, applied engineering<br />
projects, student travel to present research<br />
findings at conferences or other student activities<br />
outside of the classroom that enhance the<br />
learning experience of engineering students.<br />
English<br />
Werner W. Beyer Scholarship. Established in<br />
1989 by an anonymous donor, this endowed<br />
scholarship recognizes the contributions of Dr.<br />
Werner W. Beyer, head of the English department<br />
for many years. The scholarship is for<br />
liberal arts students, with preference given to<br />
English majors who demonstrate excellence in<br />
the use of the English language.<br />
Mary V. Black Memorial Scholarship. This<br />
scholarship was established through a gift<br />
from the estate of Mary V. Black, who entered<br />
<strong>Butler</strong> at just 16 years of age. The fund provides<br />
scholarships for students majoring in English<br />
or history.<br />
Marguerite Ham Carr English Literature<br />
Endowed Scholarship. Marguerite Ham Carr,<br />
Class of 1935, made possible this scholarship<br />
to assist students who demonstrate excellence<br />
in the study of English literature. Preference<br />
is given to a sophomore or above who has<br />
achieved at least a 3.2 grade point average. Mrs.<br />
Carr’s family includes 14 other <strong>Butler</strong> alumni,<br />
including her husband Lawrence S. Carr, Class<br />
of 1934.<br />
Jessie Hall Cochran Memorial Scholarship.<br />
Richard A. Cochran created this scholarship in<br />
memory of his wife, Jessie H. Cochran, who<br />
studied creative writing in <strong>Butler</strong>’s English<br />
department. Preference is given to creative<br />
writing students.<br />
Efroymson Creative Writing Scholarship.<br />
Jeremy Efroymson has a passion and interest<br />
in assisting talented and deserving out-of-state<br />
graduate students seeking a Master of Fine Arts<br />
(MFA) in Creative Writing degree at <strong>Butler</strong>.<br />
Such students will, in turn, provide a more<br />
diverse student body and national notoriety to<br />
the MFA program. Two scholarships will be<br />
awarded each year based on merit. The scholarship<br />
will automatically renew in the student’s<br />
second year if the student remains enrolled<br />
full-time in the program.<br />
Barbara Hendry Book Fund. Barbara Madden<br />
Hendry, Class of 1962, established this fund<br />
to provide deserving students with a stipend<br />
to purchase books for their studies. Preference<br />
is given to students majoring in English and/<br />
or creative writing. All recipients should be in<br />
good standing with the <strong>University</strong>.<br />
Margaret M. Kuhn Scholarship in Literature.<br />
Mrs. Kuhn’s husband George A. Kuhn Sr. and<br />
son, George A. Jr., both served on the <strong>Butler</strong><br />
Board of Trustees. This scholarship, endowed<br />
by the elder Kuhn in her memory, is available<br />
to upperclass students with records of distinction<br />
in any field of literature.<br />
Donald Sandstrom Memorial Scholarship.<br />
Established by Rev. Fredric Sandstrom, Class<br />
of 1972, and Karen Sandstrom Muir, Class<br />
of 1970, in honor of her father, this endowed<br />
scholarship is intended for students who show<br />
promise as writers.<br />
Jean W. Whitcraft Endowed Scholarship.<br />
Alberta Wells established this scholarship in<br />
memory of her sister, Jean Whitcraft, an English<br />
major in the Class of 1944. Mrs. Whitcraft<br />
devoted her career to teaching and retired as<br />
