Rasmussen Williams, a <strong>Butler</strong> alumna who<br />
endowed scholarships at the <strong>University</strong> in<br />
honor of several members of her family. This<br />
scholarship provides an award to a top piano<br />
student.<br />
Paul Duckwall Memorial Scholarship. Mr.<br />
Duckwall served as a clerk on post office mail<br />
cars for 43 years. He was the husband of Iva<br />
Eidson Duckwall and father of Ruth Duckwall<br />
Rasmussen Williams, a <strong>Butler</strong> alumna who<br />
endowed scholarships in memory of several<br />
members of her family. This scholarship<br />
provides an award to a top violin student<br />
in the Jordan College of Fine Arts.<br />
Francis E. Fitzgerald Flutist Scholarship.<br />
Francis Fitzgerald, a former flute instructor at<br />
<strong>Butler</strong>, endowed this scholarship in 2000 for<br />
a performing arts major whose primary instrument<br />
is the flute and who intends to pursue a<br />
career as a performing artist. The scholarship is<br />
to be administered by the office of the dean of<br />
the Jordan College of Fine Arts. Mr. Fitzgerald<br />
also funded the Alma Meyer Fitzgerald Memorial<br />
Theatre Award in memory of his wife.<br />
Spencer Fox Memorial Scholarship. A group<br />
of close friends and family of Spencer Fox,<br />
Class of 1987, began this fund in his honor and<br />
memory. A source of inspiration to all around<br />
him as he fought cystic fibrosis, Spencer was<br />
a saxophonist with the <strong>Butler</strong> marching and<br />
concert bands as well as historian of the<br />
honorary band fraternity, Kappa Kappa Psi.<br />
The scholarship is awarded annually to a<br />
member of the <strong>Butler</strong> <strong>University</strong> Marching<br />
Band.<br />
Jeanice Gartin Memorial Scholarship.<br />
Established by family and friends in memory<br />
of Jeanice Gartin, Class of 1978, this award<br />
is made annually to a member of the <strong>Butler</strong><br />
<strong>University</strong> Marching Band who shows qualities<br />
of service, spirit and comradeship.<br />
Charles Geyer Music Scholarship. According<br />
to Mr. Geyer’s will, this scholarship is to be<br />
used to “help deserving Hoosier students<br />
majoring in public school music in the school<br />
of music” (JCFA). It appears that he wanted<br />
to assist students who intended to teach music<br />
in the Indianapolis Public Schools, as he did.<br />
Mr. Geyer, Class of 1930 and master of music<br />
1943, was a charter member of Phi Mu Alpha<br />
Sinfonia at <strong>Butler</strong>. He was still giving private<br />
<strong>Butler</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />
music lessons “on all instruments” into his<br />
mid-80s, according to his wife Leone Hankins<br />
Geyer, who received a bachelor’s degree in 1939<br />
and master’s degree in 1947, both from the<br />
<strong>Butler</strong> College of Education. Charles Geyer<br />
died in Oct. 1990; Leone died in Oct. 2002.<br />
Richard C. Gigax Memorial Scholarship.<br />
Family and friends established this scholarship<br />
in memory of Richard Gigax, the owner of<br />
Meridian Music, a piano dealership in Indianapolis.<br />
He also sponsored many Jordan<br />
College of Fine Arts events. The recipient<br />
should be an undergraduate piano student<br />
of merit who demonstrates financial need.<br />
Alice Young Holsclaw Vocal Scholarship.<br />
This scholarship endowed by Alice Holsclaw is<br />
designated for talented and deserving students<br />
of voice in the Jordan College of Fine Arts.<br />
Mrs. Holsclaw, Class of 1926, was a member<br />
of Sigma Alpha Iota, an international music<br />
fraternity, and a founding member of the Delta<br />
Gamma sorority chapter at <strong>Butler</strong>. She was also<br />
active in community service and performed as<br />
a singer throughout her life. Sophomore, junior<br />
and senior applicants must have a cumulative<br />
grade point average of 2.5.<br />
Nilo Hovey Endowed Book Fund. Nilo<br />
Hovey was a concert band conductor, music<br />
educator and clarinet instructor at Jordan Conservatory<br />
from 1944-1957 (then Jordan College<br />
of Music) and enjoyed a career that spanned<br />
nearly six decades. He had a profound influence<br />
on hundreds of future band directors under his<br />
tutelage and therefore, had an indirect influence<br />
on thousands of future students. Hovey was a<br />
much sought-after guest conductor and clinician<br />
for high school, college, professional and festival<br />
concert bands, as well as the U.S. Navy and<br />
U.S. Army Bands in Washington, D.C. He was<br />
inducted into the National Band Association’s<br />
Hall Of Fame of Distinguished Band conductors<br />
at Troy, Alabama on Feb. 8, 1986. The<br />
need based stipend will be awarded to an outstanding<br />
instrumentalist with preference given<br />
to a student performing in a <strong>University</strong> band.<br />
Lucile Jones Scholarship. Lucile Jones had<br />
been a distinguished member of the Jordan<br />
College of Fine Arts faculty for 23 years when<br />
she retired in 1976. In her honor, friends and<br />
associates established the Lucile Jones Fund to<br />
provide scholarships for <strong>Butler</strong> music students.<br />
Jones died at age 74 in 1985.
