GR470, German Literature of the 19th-<br />
Century: The literature of the 19th century<br />
and of the major political, social and philosophical<br />

GR475, Wendeliteratur and Beyond: A study<br />
of contemporary writing, including social and<br />
political context, intellectual currents and stylistic<br />

GR490, Seminar: Investigation of a selected<br />
topic in German such as a genre, time period<br />
writer, artist or historical figure in its historical<br />

GR491, 492, 493, Independent Study: An<br />
opportunity for qualified students to pursue<br />
a topic of special interest. Open to majors<br />
and minors in German, by permission of the<br />
instructor and department head. Prerequisite:<br />

Spanish Courses<br />
SP101, Beginning Spanish: This is the first<br />
course in the basic Spanish language sequence.<br />
The focus is on developing the four skills of<br />
language acquisition: listening, speaking, reading<br />
and writing production. Although learning<br />
grammar is an important part of the process,<br />
it will be used around everyday situations and<br />
cultural topics related to the Spanish-Speaking<br />
world. Prerequisites: No previous Spanish<br />
instruction or placement exam results.<br />

SP102, First Year Spanish: This is the second<br />
course in the basic Spanish language sequence.<br />
The course continues to develop basic<br />
communication skills in listening, speaking,<br />
reading and writing at a more complex level.<br />
Prerequisite: SP101 or placement exam results.<br />

SP201, Spanish Conversation and<br />
Pronunciation: Development of oral<br />
proficiency. Concentration on pronunciation<br />
and practical vocabulary. Review of basic<br />
structures. Practice of speaking skills in class<br />
discussions. Uses audiovisual materials to<br />
increase accuracy and fluency. Prerequisite:<br />
One year of college Spanish or placement test<br />
authorization. (U)(3). Annually.<br />
SP203, Intermediate Spanish I: This is<br />
the first course in the intermediate Spanish<br />
language sequence. After a review of fundamentals,<br />
the course develops intermediate skills in<br />
reading, writing, speaking and listening while<br />
building communicative competence and<br />
enhancing social and cultural awareness of the<br />
Spanish-speaking world. Prerequisite: One year<br />
of college Spanish, SP102 or placement exam<br />
results. (U)(3). Annually.<br />
SP204, Intermediate Spanish II: This is the<br />
second course in the intermediate Spanish<br />
language sequence. Further review of fundamentals.<br />
The course continues development of<br />
intermediate skills in reading, writing, speaking<br />
and listening while building communicative<br />
competence and enhancing social and cultural<br />
awareness of the Spanish-speaking world.<br />
