Biological Sciences<br />
Dr. James Berry Tropical Field Study Fund.<br />
James W. Berry was a member of <strong>Butler</strong>’s<br />
biological science faculty from 1967 to 1996.<br />
Among his many contributions, he initiated the<br />
zoology department’s course in Tropical Field<br />
Biology in 1969. This fund provides special<br />
funding for students to participate in the<br />
Tropical Field Biology course, which involves<br />
not only the onsite study of ocean biology but<br />
helps students understand their responsibility<br />
to the environment as well.<br />
Mary Jane Brown Fund. Dr. Brown, Class of<br />
1919, established this fund to commemorate<br />
her retirement from distinguished careers in<br />
which she taught university-level zoology and<br />
the natural sciences, and conducted research<br />
at the Indiana <strong>University</strong> School of Medicine.<br />
It is used to help defray the cost of the marine<br />
biology trip associated with the Tropical Field<br />
Biology course.<br />
L. Dorcas Bush Biological Sciences Scholarship.<br />
Established in 2000 through an estate gift<br />
from L. Dorcas Bush, this scholarship provides<br />
funding for deserving students in biological<br />
sciences.<br />
Paul and May S. Iske Scholarship. May S.<br />
Iske, Class of 1924, served on the <strong>Butler</strong> faculty<br />
as a professor of zoology for 42 years. Her<br />
husband Paul was a physician who completed<br />
his pre-med studies at <strong>Butler</strong>. The Office of<br />
Financial Aid administers this scholarship.<br />
Preference is given to students who are biology<br />
majors and who maintain at least a 3.0 grade<br />
point average. It is renewable.<br />
Frederick Kavanagh Botany Scholarship.<br />
Dr. Kavanagh, a microbiologist retired from Eli<br />
Lilly and Company, established this endowed<br />
scholarship in the 1980s for the study of<br />
botany.<br />
John E. Potzger Memorial Scholarship. John<br />
Potzger, educator and botanist, graduated<br />
from <strong>Butler</strong> in 1927. After receiving his<br />
master’s degree from <strong>Butler</strong> in 1931 and his<br />
doctorate in botany from Indiana <strong>University</strong> in<br />
1932, Potzger returned to <strong>Butler</strong> as professor of<br />
botany. He gained a national reputation for his<br />
research in taxonomy, quadrat studies and ring<br />
count, morphology and pollen analysis. This<br />
scholarship in his memory was established in<br />
1955 for a deserving biology major in the study<br />
of botany or environmental science.<br />
Katrina Roch Seitz Science Education<br />
Endowed Fund. Dr. Katrina Roch Seitz,<br />
Class of 1979, created this fund to support the<br />
natural sciences at <strong>Butler</strong>, including physics,<br />
astronomy, chemistry and biology. The fund<br />
may be used either as scholarship support for<br />
students or to host a scholar-in-residence at the<br />
<strong>University</strong> who will present lectures, workshops<br />
and seminars.<br />
Philip St. John Fund. This fund honors<br />
Professor Emeritus Philip A. St. John, a<br />
member of the <strong>Butler</strong> faculty from 1967 to<br />
1989. St. John was a professor of zoology,<br />
department head and associate dean of the<br />
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. This fund<br />
helps to defray the cost of the marine biology<br />
field trip taken in conjunction with the Tropical<br />
Field Biology course offered in the Department<br />
of Biology.<br />
Elise S. Turner Scholarship. This scholarship<br />
was established through the estate of Elise<br />
Turner, Class of 1952, for students majoring in<br />
biology. Application for this scholarship should<br />
be made directly to the biology department.<br />
William G. and Lucile J. Weiss Scholarship<br />
Award. This award was established by a bequest<br />
from the estates of William G. Weiss, Class of<br />
1932, and Lucile J. Weiss, Class of 1941, for<br />
students majoring in biology.<br />
Chemistry<br />
Frances A. Brockman Chemistry Scholarship.<br />
This fund was established through the estate<br />
of Frances Brockman, Class of 1951, to benefit<br />
deserving chemistry majors in the College of<br />
Liberal Arts and Sciences. She was employed as<br />
a chemist with Eli Lilly and Company. While at<br />
<strong>Butler</strong>, she also played trumpet in the marching<br />
band, and her estate also established the Frances<br />
A. Brockman Music Scholarship in the Jordan<br />
College of Fine Arts.<br />
