Francis E. Cislak Chemistry Fellowship<br />

Awards. Cislak Fellows are freshman chemistry<br />

majors with outstanding scholastic and personal<br />

records, demonstrated interest in the natural<br />

sciences and selection based “with full<br />

consideration being given to deportment and<br />

extracurricular activities.” Candidates apply<br />

directly to the chemistry department. The<br />

award was established in 1974 by a gift from<br />

Reilly Industries to recognize Dr. Cislak’s<br />

outstanding contributions to his field. He held<br />

more than 100 patents in the United States and<br />

30 in European countries and Japan. He was<br />

instrumental in the development of the Reilly<br />

Laboratories, and under his leadership, Reilly<br />

became the world’s largest manufacturer of<br />

pyridine chemicals — by-products of coal-tar<br />

distillation whose uses include manufacture<br />

of pharmaceuticals. Upon his retirement from<br />

Reilly, Dr. Cislak lectured in chemistry at<br />

<strong>Butler</strong>.<br />

Willard and Hazel Eason Scholarship. In<br />

appreciation for the exceptional chemistry<br />

training he received at <strong>Butler</strong>, which provided<br />

the foundation for his highly successful career,<br />

the late Willard Eason, Class of 1954, and<br />

his wife Hazel M. Stratton Eason established<br />

this scholarship fund for students majoring in<br />

chemistry. Eason served on the <strong>Butler</strong> Board<br />

of Trustees. He received an honorary doctor of<br />

science degree in 1975 and the <strong>Butler</strong> Medal<br />

in 1994.<br />

Lilly Industries Inc. Endowed Scholarship.<br />

Lilly Industries Inc., Indianapolis, endowed a<br />

scholarship for full-time chemistry majors in<br />

their junior and senior years. Recipients must<br />

be in good standing within the chemistry<br />

curriculum and be residents of Indiana or an<br />

immediately adjacent state. Although Lilly Industries<br />

was acquired in 2001 by Valspar Corp.<br />

of Minnesota, the scholarship still bears Lilly<br />

Industries’ name.<br />

Dr. Deborah A. Studen-Pavlovich Book<br />

Fund. Deborah Studen-Pavlovich received a<br />

scholarship as a student and truly appreciates<br />

the value of financial support for students. The<br />

fund provides a book stipend for a student<br />

majoring in chemistry.<br />

<strong>Butler</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

G. Cullen and Margaret Lomax Thomas<br />

Scholarship. This fund was established in 1973<br />

by Margaret Lomax Thomas, Class of 1918,<br />

widow of one of <strong>Butler</strong>’s all-time great alumni<br />

and an outstanding athlete during his college<br />

years. G. Cullen Thomas, Class of 1913, built a<br />

career as a food chemist and was a consultant to<br />

the Food and Drug Administration. He served<br />

many years as a <strong>Butler</strong> trustee and became an<br />

acknowledged leader in his profession. The<br />

recipient of this scholarship will be a first-year<br />

student with a keen interest in the sciences,<br />

especially chemistry.<br />

Computer Science<br />

Barnes/Madden “Move Ahead” Scholarship.<br />

Tracy Barnes, Class of 1998, and Virgil Madden,<br />

Class of 1980, established this fund to provide<br />

financial assistance to deserving <strong>Butler</strong> students.<br />

Two awards are given annually, one recipient<br />

majoring in computer science and the other<br />

majoring in political science or history. Recipients<br />

should be full- or part-time, African-<br />

American students with a grade point average<br />

between 2.0 and 3.0. They should be between<br />

their sophomore and senior years and are<br />

encouraged to volunteer with a local nonprofit<br />

organization.<br />

Economics<br />

Omar S. and Harriet D. Bruner Jr. Scholarship.<br />

This endowment, established in 1983 by<br />

Omar S. “Buck” Bruner Jr., class of 1948 and<br />

his late first wife Harriet, provides scholarships<br />

to students majoring in business administration,<br />

economics or pre-law who need financial<br />

assistance.<br />

Craig Fenneman Endowed Scholarship. This<br />

fund was created in 2002 by Craig Fenneman,<br />

Class of 1991 and former president of <strong>Butler</strong>’s<br />

Student Government Association. He is the<br />

owner of Fenneman & Associates, a commercial<br />

real estate development and management<br />

company; and owner and CEO of Southern Bells,<br />

Inc., a holding company for restaurant franchises.<br />

Preference is given to an entering first-year<br />

student who has declared an intention to major<br />

in economics. If no such students are available,<br />

consideration is given to those expressing interest<br />

in social sciences. The scholarship may be<br />

renewed as long as the recipient maintains a 3.0<br />

grade point average and is enrolled in economics<br />

or a social science major in the College of<br />

Liberal Arts and Sciences.
