• COM265, Media Literacy: From a<br />

media literacy perspective, students will<br />

develop an understanding of media<br />

production, products and audiences;<br />

the constraints media systems operate<br />

within, and cultural implications of<br />

media and media systems. Prerequisite:<br />

Sophomore or higher standing. Non-<br />

CCOM majors must have permission<br />

of instructor or Associate Dean. (U)(3).<br />

• Foreign language requirement of six<br />

credit hours at the 200 level or above.<br />

• Must maintain cumulative GPA of 2.0<br />

Why Study Communication<br />

Sciences and Disorders?<br />

The ability to communicate is one of our<br />

greatest human gifts. It is a fundamental human<br />

right and plays a central role in the dignity and<br />

value of human life. The remarkable ability to<br />

communicate allows us to realize our human<br />

potential and connect with other people. Problems<br />

with communication have a great impact<br />

on all aspects of life. The Communication<br />

Sciences and Disorders (CSD) Program at<br />

<strong>Butler</strong> is dedicated to educating students so<br />

that they may assist those who experience<br />

communication disorders.<br />

Why Study CSD at <strong>Butler</strong>?<br />

There are excellent reasons to obtain the<br />

CSD degree at <strong>Butler</strong>. Our students receive a<br />

strong foundation in basic courses that prepares<br />

them for success in graduate school. Our<br />

students have had outstanding success in gaining<br />

admission into prestigious and competitive<br />

graduate programs throughout the United<br />

States. In addition, our undergraduate students<br />

have many opportunities for experiential<br />

learning. Students provide treatment for speech<br />

<strong>Butler</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

and language disorders through the <strong>Butler</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> Speech-Language Clinic. Students<br />

provide speech, language and hearing screening<br />

services to area schools. In addition, students<br />

engage in research and teaching activities with<br />

faculty mentors, and work with other professionals<br />

in the Indianapolis community through<br />

internships. Finally, the CSD degree at <strong>Butler</strong><br />

leads to high demand careers in speech-language<br />

pathology, audiology and speech science.<br />

CSD Program Student Learning<br />

Outcomes<br />

• Students majoring in Communication<br />

Sciences and Disorders at <strong>Butler</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

will demonstrate foundational knowledge<br />

of biological, physical, social sciences,<br />

mathematics and cultural diversity as<br />

well as knowledge of normal structures,<br />

processes and development needed for<br />

the human communication system.<br />

• Students will also demonstrate foundational<br />

knowledge about ethical issues and research<br />

methods in communication sciences and<br />

disorders.<br />

• Another important aspect of student<br />

learning is the study and observation of<br />

various communication disorders and basic<br />

treatment strategies.<br />

• Finally, students in CSD will demonstrate<br />

adequate knowledge for acceptance in a<br />

speech-language pathology, audiology or<br />

speech science graduate program.<br />
