numerous committees for the <strong>University</strong>. He<br />

is a former member of the <strong>Butler</strong> Board of<br />

Trustees. Preference for this scholarship is given<br />

to full-time students in the College of Business<br />

who have an interest in nonprofit business<br />

management.<br />

King Family Scholarship. This fund was established<br />

by Richard Nelson “Dick” King, Class<br />

of 1960, to honor his father Merlin Henry<br />

King, Class of 1931, and two paternal uncles,<br />

Donald James King, Class of 1928, and Robert<br />

Nelson King (attended 1928 to 1930); and his<br />

mother Ethel Mae Akers King, who started her<br />

studies in the early 1930s and returned in 1959<br />

to become a member of the Class of 1963.<br />

Ethel Mae King passed away on September 20,<br />

2010 at the age of 101. It provides scholarship<br />

support to students enrolled in the College of<br />

Business.<br />

Krannert Scholarship. Herman C. Krannert,<br />

a former member of <strong>Butler</strong>’s Board of Trustees,<br />

received an honorary degree from the<br />

<strong>University</strong> in 1960. His wife Ellnora Decker<br />

Krannert, who received an honorary doctor of<br />

music degree from <strong>Butler</strong>, assisted him in his<br />

business, Inland Container Corporation, and<br />

served on the board of the Krannert Charitable<br />

Trust. The trust, established to create “centers<br />

of excellence” in education, medicine, youth<br />

services and the performing arts, made possible<br />

the Krannert Room in <strong>Butler</strong>’s Clowes Memorial<br />

Hall and funded the Krannert Scholarship.<br />

Freshman students apply through the College<br />

of Business dean’s office. Four scholarships are<br />

awarded each year.<br />

Andre B. Lacy Business Accelerator Scholarship.<br />

This fund honors Mr. Lacy’s outstanding<br />

achievements in business and civic enterprises<br />

with the hope that his example will inspire<br />

future generations of <strong>Butler</strong> students to emulate<br />

his passion, effort and success. Preference is<br />

given to one or more sophomore, junior or<br />

senior students in the College of Business who<br />

are interns in the <strong>Butler</strong> Business Accelerator<br />

(BBA). If a suitable intern cannot be identified,<br />

another student with the BBA may be selected.<br />

the eligibility requirements established for the<br />

<strong>Butler</strong> Business Scholars will be considered for<br />

this scholarship.<br />

McDonald and Cech Financial Strategies<br />

Group of Wells Fargo Advisors Award. Larry<br />

S. McDonald and the McDonald and Cech<br />

Financial Strategies Group of Wells Fargo<br />

established this fund to provide financial<br />

assistance to <strong>Butler</strong> students who are enrolled<br />

in the College of Business and who maintain<br />

average grades.<br />

Charles O. McGaughey Leadership Award.<br />

Mr. McGaughey’s family established this award<br />

in 1990 to honor his life of leadership and<br />

community service. It is for students who have<br />

completed two academic years in the College<br />

of Business or College of Liberal Arts and<br />

Sciences and who demonstrate leadership<br />

abilities and appreciation of basic American<br />

values as evidenced by a record of achievement<br />

in service to the community and to the<br />

<strong>University</strong>.<br />

McKenzie Family Scholarship. Stephen E.<br />

and Jill McCann McKenzie are both loyal<br />

alumni of <strong>Butler</strong>’s College of Business. Jill<br />

earned her degree in 1982, Steve, in 1983. The<br />

couple established this scholarship in 2003<br />

to assist future generations of <strong>Butler</strong> students<br />

in obtaining an education. It is awarded to a<br />

graduate of a public high school who is enrolled<br />

full-time at <strong>Butler</strong> with a double major in business<br />

and foreign language. Preference is given to<br />

students of color.<br />

Bert E. Metcalf, Jr. Scholarship. Mr. Metcalf,<br />

Class of 1950, established this fund to benefit<br />

students in the College of Business. It was<br />

initially an annual scholarship that was later<br />

endowed through a gift from his estate. Funds<br />

provide scholarships for students from Marion<br />

County or contiguous counties who demonstrate<br />

academic qualifications and financial<br />

need.<br />

M. Porter Murphy Endowed Business<br />

Scholarship. William F. Murphy, Class of<br />

1973, created this fund in memory of his father<br />

M. Porter Murphy. It provides financial assistance<br />

to deserving students enrolled in the College of<br />

Business. Preference is given to students who<br />

maintain a grade point average of 3.25 or better;<br />

are involved in campus activities such<br />

Lowrie Family Fund for <strong>Butler</strong> Business<br />

Scholars. Ted Lowrie graduated from <strong>Butler</strong><br />

in 1971 and established this scholarship to<br />

provide tuition support to students enrolled<br />

in the College of Business. Students who meet<br />

75 <strong>Butler</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />
