ED498, Methods for Teaching Multilingual<br />
Learners: This course will assist in understanding<br />
effective content-based teaching in a pluralistic,<br />
multilingual society. An understanding of<br />
socio-linguists and second language acquisition<br />
will frame an analysis of curriculum, materials,<br />
instructional strategies, assessments and<br />
classroom management. Students are required<br />
to complete a field experience in a setting with<br />
culturally and linguistically diverse students.<br />

Physical Education/<br />
Health Education<br />
The Physical Education/Health Education<br />
program functions as a content-specific program<br />
within the Middle/Secondary program. It<br />
prepares students for Indiana teaching licensure<br />
in Physical Education (K–12) and Health<br />
Education (6–12). By successfully completing<br />
<strong>Butler</strong> <strong>University</strong> requirements, program<br />
requirements, student teaching, and PRAXIS<br />
I, or accepted benchmark indicator on file,<br />
and PRAXIS II, the Physical Education/Health<br />
Education major meets the state licensure<br />
requirements. Physical Education/Health<br />
Education majors can also choose a nonlicensure<br />
concentration in Exercise Science.<br />
Non-licensure students must successfully<br />
complete the <strong>Butler</strong> <strong>University</strong> requirements,<br />
program requirements, PRAXIS I, or accepted<br />
benchmark indicator on file, and the Advanced<br />
Internship.<br />
All Physical Education/Health Education<br />
students are prepared for American College of<br />
Sports Medicine (ACSM) Certified Personal<br />
Trainer (cPT), Health/Fitness Instructor<br />
(ACSM-HFT), National Strength and Conditional<br />
Association (NSCA) Certified Personal<br />
Trainer (NSCA-CPT) and/or Certified Strength<br />
and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) exams.<br />
Effective teaching and training principles are<br />
applied to students’ interests in coaching various<br />
sports on all levels. Students are prepared to<br />
pursue advanced degrees based on individual<br />
interests in related disciplines e.g., Physical<br />
Education, Health Promotion, Nutrition,<br />
Exercise Science, Physical Therapy, Athletic<br />
Training, Kinesiology or School Counseling.<br />

PE127, Introduction to Health, Physical<br />
Education, Recreation and Dance: An orientation<br />
course for physical education majors;<br />
considers history, philosophy, professional<br />
organizations and job opportunities in areas<br />
of physical education, dance, recreation, and<br />
health and safety. (U)(2). Fall and spring.<br />
PE128, Introduction to Health Education:<br />
This introductory course discusses basic<br />
philosophy and practice in health education.<br />
Emphases are on literature and organizations<br />
that support health educators. Topics include<br />
safety education, community education and<br />
coordinated school health. (U)(2). Fall and<br />
spring.<br />
PE202, Skills Series: Basketball/Soccer:<br />
Course emphasizes content knowledge and<br />
development of competent or proficient motor<br />
skill performance using basic sport-related skills<br />
that are foundational to effective teaching and<br />
coaching. Related emphasis includes sport history,<br />
culture, conventions and traditions, rules,<br />
language, tactics and strategies, competition<br />
and fair play. Prerequisite: permission by the<br />
instructor for non-education majors. (U)(1).<br />

emphasizes content knowledge and development<br />
of competent or proficient motor skill performance<br />
