to the theory and practices necessary to<br />
plan, implement and analyze the effectiveness<br />
of organizational change programs. Explores<br />

become effective internal and external change<br />

MBA558, Perspectives on Leadership:<br />
The objective of this seminar is to examine<br />
leadership approaches/styles in an experiential,<br />
in-depth manner. The course includes a highly<br />
engaged and participative exploration of both<br />
business and not-for-profit organization<br />
leadership (including site visits), as well as a<br />
clarification of the students’ personal styles.<br />

MBA561, Financial Institutions and Markets:<br />
This course covers the characteristics and<br />
management of financial institutions. As a<br />
foundation for this study, the course examines<br />
interest rate theory and interest rate risk<br />
management, the regulatory environment,<br />
and other features of the financial markets.<br />
Prerequisite: MBA530. (G)(3). Fall.<br />
MBA562, International Finance: The course<br />
provides analytical financial tools to managers<br />
as they operate in the international economy.<br />
Hedging techniques are introduced and foreign<br />
investment and financing decisions are examined.<br />
Prerequisite: MBA530. (G)(3). Spring.<br />
MBA563, Seminar in Investment Management:<br />
Examines the valuation of financial<br />
securities using traditional and modern<br />
financial theories. Given valuation results, it<br />
also examines portfolio construction related<br />
to maximizing return and minimizing risk.<br />
The case method is employed. Prerequisite:<br />

MBA564, Derivatives: Futures, Options and<br />
Swaps: The course provides an introduction to<br />
derivative markets. Specifically, students will<br />
<strong>Butler</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />
receive a working knowledge of futures, options<br />
and swaps. This course will emphasize the use<br />
of derivative instruments in the management<br />
of financial risk exposure. Calculus is not a<br />
prerequisite for this course. This course is an<br />
MBA finance elective. Prerequisite: MBA530.<br />

MBA565, Applied Portfolio Management:<br />
Students serve as managers of a real dollar<br />
(approximately $1 million) investment portfolio.<br />
The course provides hands-on experience in<br />
portfolio management, including investment<br />
policy statement preparation; economic,<br />
industry, and company analysis; and investment<br />
strategy implementation. Students will report<br />
on their performance to the Endowment and<br />
Investment Committee of <strong>Butler</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s<br />
Board of Trustees. Prerequisite: MBA563.<br />

MBA567, Financial Theory and Cases: This<br />
course builds on the corporate finance theory<br />
introduced in MBA530. Additional topics such<br />
as option theory, risk and value creation in<br />
capital budgeting, investment-financing<br />
interactions, and signaling theory are addressed.<br />
The case method is extensively employed<br />
to stress application of theory and limits of<br />
theory in aiding decision-making. Prerequisite:<br />
MBA530. (G)(3). Spring.<br />
MBA571, Global Business Experience: This<br />
course introduces students to the business and<br />
cultural environments of a particular foreign<br />
country through pre-trip work, a short-term<br />
study trip, and the preparation of a reflective<br />
paper. Designed to serve as a 2-credit elective<br />
course, it may be counted towards any of the<br />
areas of concentration and satisfies the two G<br />
points MBA program requirement. Prerequisite:<br />
Completion of 7 hours of 500-level<br />
coursework. (G)(2). Summer.<br />
MBA573, Management Control System:<br />
This course examines the various techniques<br />
used by managers to ensure that the decisions<br />
and behavior of people in an organization are<br />
consistent with the organization’s goals and<br />
strategies. The course focuses on formal planning<br />
and budget processes, incentive systems,<br />
internal control systems, balanced scorecard<br />
and behavior problems associated with financial<br />
results control. Prerequisite: MBA520. (G)(2).<br />
