The fund also provides funding for projects<br />
and travel to academic conferences for students<br />
majoring in religion; programming at <strong>Butler</strong>’s<br />
Center for Faith and Vocation in pre-theological<br />
advising for students who go on to seminary<br />
or to other graduate programs in theology; and<br />
bringing guest speakers to campus from those<br />
graduate programs.<br />
Raymond R. and Margaret E. Miller<br />
Scholarship. This fund was established by<br />
annuities that Mr. and Mrs. Miller had with<br />
the <strong>University</strong>. Raymond Miller earned a<br />
master’s degree in education and theology<br />
from <strong>Butler</strong> in 1920. He was a teacher,<br />
principal, superintendent, pastor and professor<br />
— always with the support of his wife Margaret<br />
Threlkeld Miller. This scholarship provides<br />
tuition support to deserving students pursuing<br />
studies in the ministry or education.<br />
William L. and Ella P. Powell Scholarship.<br />
Ella Powell of Lebanon, Ind., established this<br />
scholarship through a bequest in 1952. <strong>Butler</strong>’s<br />
share of her bequest was to be kept in a permanent<br />
fund to be called the William L. Powell<br />
and Ella P. Powell Scholarship Fund, with the<br />
income awarded annually to a worthy student<br />
in the College of Religion. When Mrs. Powell<br />
prepared her will in 1947, the College of<br />
Religion was still at <strong>Butler</strong>; today, this<br />
scholarship is awarded to students majoring<br />
in religion and religious studies.<br />
Science<br />
D. J. Angus Scientech Educational<br />
Foundation Scholarship. This scholarship is<br />
for a pharmacy and/or science student in his or<br />
her sophomore or junior year and is intended<br />
to serve both as an award and as an impetus for<br />
continued excellence. The primary criterion for<br />
this award is the greatest improvement in grade<br />
point average from the previous year by a<br />
science and/or a pharmacy student. The<br />
recipient is to be an undergraduate who has<br />
displayed good citizenship. The D.J. Angus<br />
Scientech Education Foundation and the scholarships<br />
they award were established by Robert<br />
B. Annis, in whose name two other endowed<br />
scholarships have been established at <strong>Butler</strong>.<br />
Robert B. Annis Student Improvement<br />
Endowed Scholarship. This fund benefits<br />
students who improve their cumulative grade<br />
point average during their sophomore or junior<br />
years studying science, mathematics or other<br />
closely related subjects. The Office of Financial<br />
Aid selects the recipient based solely on the<br />
student’s scholastic improvement.<br />
Robert B. Annis Endowed Scholarship.<br />
As the founder (in 1928) and owner of R.B.<br />
Annis Co., a precision instruments and<br />
magnetic devices firm, Mr. Annis was recognized<br />
worldwide as an expert in his field. This<br />
fund provides support to students in science,<br />
mathematics or other closely related subjects.<br />
Paul Church Memorial Scholarship. Juanita<br />
Bechtold Church, Class of 1939, established<br />
this scholarship in memory of her husband<br />
Paul V. Church, who completed graduate work<br />
at <strong>Butler</strong>. Preference is given to recipients who<br />
major in science and have at least a 3.0 grade<br />
point average.<br />
James D. Esamann Scholarship in Science.<br />
Mr. Esamann created this fund through a<br />
generous gift from his estate. A member of<br />
the Class of 1950, he worked for Eli Lilly and<br />
Company for 30 years. This scholarship is to be<br />
awarded to students pursuing studies in science.<br />
G. Cullen and Margaret Lomax Thomas<br />
Scholarship. This fund provides scholarship<br />
support to students with a keen interest in the<br />
sciences, especially chemistry. It was established<br />
by Margaret Lomax Thomas, Class of 1918, in<br />
honor of her husband G. Cullen Thomas, Class<br />
of 1913. Mr. Thomas was a legendary collegiate<br />
athlete and former athletic director at <strong>Butler</strong>.<br />
He built a successful career as a food chemist,<br />
served on <strong>Butler</strong>’s Board of Directors and was<br />
awarded the <strong>Butler</strong> Medal in 1960.<br />
Sociology and/or Criminology<br />
Dr. Richard E. Martin Memorial Scholarship.<br />
The family and friends of Dr. Richard E.<br />
Martin endowed a scholarship in memory of<br />
Martin, a sociologist, professor and administrator<br />
at <strong>Butler</strong> for 31 years. This scholarship<br />
will benefit students studying sociology or<br />
criminology in their senior year. It is awarded<br />
based on academic performance and service<br />
to the community.<br />
