Areas of Emphasis<br />

The following emphases may be added to<br />

any music degree, although they are designed<br />

primarily for the B.A. degree. At least 50% of<br />

the credits in any concentration or emphasis<br />

must be unique to that program and may not<br />

overlap with another concentration/emphasis,<br />

major or minor (except as free electives).<br />

Music Minor<br />

A minor in music is available through the<br />

Jordan College of Fine Arts to students who<br />

are not enrolled in a music major. It consists<br />

of twenty-four (24) semester hours, of which<br />

fourteen to sixteen (14-16) are specified. The<br />

remaining hours are unspecified and may be<br />

taken in applied music, ensemble, music<br />

education, music history or music theory.<br />

Jazz Studies Minor<br />

A minor in jazz studies is available through<br />

the Jordan College of Fine Arts to students who<br />

are not enrolled in a music major. It consists<br />

of twenty-four (24) semester hours, of which<br />

twenty-two (22) are specified. The remaining<br />

hours are unspecified and may be taken from<br />

jazz electives.<br />

Music Graduation Requirements<br />

Common to all Undergraduate<br />

Music Degree Curricula<br />

• The last two semesters of applied study<br />

must be earned in residence at the <strong>University</strong>.<br />

• In most areas, students are given a choice<br />

of applied instructor dependent upon<br />

teacher availability and approval of the<br />

chief executive of the School of Music.<br />

• Each student who makes use of a universityowned<br />

band or orchestral instrument is<br />

responsible for any damage or loss. There<br />

is also a fine for unauthorized use of<br />

university-owned instruments.<br />

• Applied Upper Divisional Exam: An upper<br />

divisional examination is required of all<br />

music majors whose degrees require applied<br />

major study beyond the sophomore level.<br />

Students must audition for upper level<br />

applied study during board examinations<br />

following the fourth semester of lower<br />

level applied study. Failure to pass the<br />

upper divisional will require repetition of<br />

lower level applied study until such time as<br />

the exam is passed; applied credits taken<br />

during this period will count as electives<br />

but will not fulfill the required applied<br />

credits. A student who does not pass the<br />

upper divisional exam may reapply by the<br />

end of the next semester of applied study.<br />

If a student does not pass on the second<br />

attempt, the student may not complete a<br />

music degree that requires the applied<br />

upper divisional exam. A student must<br />

have obtained upper level status in applied<br />

music in order to present a degree-required<br />

recital. Details of the contents of this exam<br />

are available from each area of applied study.<br />

• Music education students are required to<br />

pass an upper divisional exam in music<br />

education at the end of the sophomore<br />

year. Specific requirements are on file in<br />

the music office.<br />

• Music composition students are required to<br />

pass an upper divisional exam in composition.<br />

This is normally done at the completion<br />

of the fourth semester of compositional<br />

study. Specific requirements are on file in<br />

the music office.<br />

• Students must pass a recital hearing before<br />

presenting an instrumental or vocal degree<br />

recital. Details are available from the<br />

School of Music office.<br />

• Master of Music (M.M.) in Composition<br />

• Master of Music (M.M.) in Conducting<br />

(choral or instrumental)<br />

• Master of Music (M.M.) in Music<br />

Education<br />

• Master of Music (M.M.) in Music History<br />

• Master of Music (M.M.) in Music Theory<br />

• Master of Music (M.M.) in Performance<br />

(piano, voice or orchestral instrument)<br />

• Master of Music (M.M.) in Piano Pedagogy<br />

Master of Music Degrees with a<br />

Double Major<br />

Students may also earn a Master of Music<br />

(M.M.) Degree with a Double Major by combining<br />

two of the above areas. One area will be<br />

declared the primary major; the other will be<br />

the secondary major. Applicants will need to<br />

complete the relevant audition/interview for<br />
