Requirements for the Major<br />

Applicants are admitted to the program<br />

on the basis of academic acceptance by the<br />

<strong>University</strong> and an audition or portfolio<br />

presentation and interview.<br />

The B.A. in Theatre requires completion of<br />

124 credit hours. In addition to the university<br />

core curriculum the student takes courses in<br />

the analysis, history, technique and production<br />

of theatre and related courses in other departments.<br />

The B.S. in Arts Administration —<br />

Theatre requires completion of a total of 128<br />

credit hours. The Licensure in Teaching<br />

requires an additional 41 credit hours in the<br />

College of Education and specific testing<br />

requirements for admission to the program<br />

and licensure for the State of Indiana.<br />

Requirements for the Minor<br />

The minor in theatre requires 24 credit hours<br />

in theatre, 10 of which are stipulated with the<br />

remaining hours selected from a list of theatre<br />

courses. No audition is required.<br />

Alpha Psi Omega, Omicron Cast is the <strong>Butler</strong><br />

chapter of the National Theatre Honorary<br />

Dramatic Society.<br />

Auditions for mainstage productions are<br />

limited to majors. Any <strong>Butler</strong> student may<br />

audition for student-directed productions.<br />

Theatre Courses<br />

TH100, Professional Theatre Practices:<br />

Development of professional rehearsal,<br />

performance and production techniques and<br />

discipline. Enrollment in this course is required<br />

of freshmen and sophomores in the theatre<br />

program. This is a pass/fail course and must<br />

be successfully completed four times to meet<br />

graduation requirements in the theatre major.<br />

Open to Theatre majors only. (U)(0). Fall and<br />

spring.<br />

TH105, Theatre as a Visual Art: To provide<br />

freshman theatre majors with a foundation for<br />

the principles of design in stage productions. In<br />

addition to regular class sections, students will<br />

<strong>Butler</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

be required to attend theatre productions in<br />

the region and exhibitions at local art galleries.<br />

Required of all Freshman Theatre majors. Open<br />

to Theatre majors only. (U)(3). Spring only.<br />

TH110, Introduction to Acting: Scene study<br />

including basic techniques of performance with<br />

experience in preparation and presentation. For<br />

non-majors. (U)(3). Fall and spring.<br />

TH111, Acting I: Theories and principles of<br />

acting as an art including flexible physical and<br />

vocal techniques. Enrollment by audition only.<br />

Audit only with consent of instructor. Open to<br />

Theatre majors only. (U)(3). Fall only.<br />

TH112, Acting II: Fundamentals of performance<br />

preparation. Includes the preparation and class<br />

presentation of a series of scenes selected from<br />

major theatrical works. Prerequisite: TH111.<br />

Audit only with consent of instructor. (U)(3).<br />

Spring only.<br />

TH113, The Idea of Theatre: Introductory<br />

foundation course exploring the theory and<br />

practice of performance. Required of all<br />

freshmen theatre majors. Open to Theatre<br />

majors only. (U)(2). Fall only.<br />

TH114, The Idea of Theatre II: Viewing<br />

and critical analysis of professional theatre<br />

productions in the region. Required of all<br />

freshman theatre majors. Open to Theatre<br />

majors only. (U)(2). Spring only.<br />

TH115, Introduction to Acting II: This<br />

course is intended for the non-theatre major<br />

who wishes to further pursue the craft of acting.<br />

The student may wish to pursue acting as an<br />

avocation, or to apply the skills (focus, vocal<br />

and physical control and specificity, relaxation<br />

and readiness) to another area of interest.<br />

Prerequisite: TH110. (U)(3). Occasionally.<br />

TH123, Makeup: Exploration of twodimensional<br />

modeling techniques as an aspect<br />

of character portrayal. Open to Theatre majors<br />

only. (U)(2). Fall only.<br />

TH200, Production Fundamentals: Introduction<br />

to the study and practice of theatrical<br />

production. Explores the interrelationship of<br />

theatrical production design and technology to<br />

performance. Laboratory experience included.<br />

Open to Theatre majors only. (U)(2). Fall only.
