Timothy J. Gerend Men’s Golf Scholarship.<br />

Mr. Gerend, Class of 1993, graduated magna<br />

cum laude and was a member of the men’s golf<br />

team. The recipient of this scholarship shall be<br />

a full-time student participating on the men’s<br />

golf team.<br />

James W. Gibson Memorial Endowed Scholarship.<br />

Hazel G. Gibson, a friend of <strong>Butler</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong>, established this fund in memory<br />

of her son, who died in 2002 at age 55. Jim<br />

Gibson was an avid golfer who attended <strong>Butler</strong><br />

before graduating from Franklin College. This<br />

fund provides financial assistance to <strong>Butler</strong><br />

students who play on the men’s or women’s<br />

golf teams and who maintain a 3.0 grade point<br />

average. If a qualified golf team member cannot<br />

be identified, the scholarship may support a<br />

pharmacy major in the College of Pharmacy<br />

and Health Sciences.<br />

Paul D. “Tony” Hinkle Scholarship Fund for<br />

Athletics. Friends and former students established<br />

this fund in 1969 to honor <strong>Butler</strong> legend<br />

Paul D. “Tony” Hinkle. Under his direction,<br />

<strong>Butler</strong> football, basketball and baseball teams<br />

posted more than 1,000 victories, placing him<br />

among the nation’s all-time winningest coaches.<br />

Coach Hinkle’s career with <strong>Butler</strong> athletics had<br />

spanned nearly a half-century when he retired<br />

in 1970. He passed away in 1992.<br />

Lake Trust Book Fund. Thomas H. and<br />

Marjorie Lytle Lake were longtime friends<br />

and supporters of <strong>Butler</strong> <strong>University</strong>. A generous<br />

bequest from their estate has funded a wide<br />

range of important initiatives at <strong>Butler</strong>. This<br />

endowed fund provides a book stipend for<br />

female athletes.<br />

David M. Lautner Memorial Golf Scholarship.<br />

This fund was established, with support from<br />

family and many friends, by Carolyn Pickering<br />

Lautner, Class of 1945, in memory of her son<br />

David Lautner, Class of 1974. David was a<br />

three-sport athlete who came to <strong>Butler</strong> on a<br />

football scholarship and threw the shot put and<br />

javelin on the Bulldogs track team. Like his<br />

mother, he was a talented golfer. This scholarship,<br />

which is also supported by an annual golf tournament,<br />

provides scholarships to members of<br />

both the men’s and women’s golf teams.<br />

Jim Mallers Scholarship for Men’s Baseball.<br />

Thomas D. Ehrsam, Class of 1961 and a threeyear<br />

baseball letter winner at <strong>Butler</strong>, established<br />

this scholarship in honor of fellow varsity player<br />

and baseball coach James C. Mallers, Class of<br />

1958. The financial aid office administers this<br />

fund to provide scholarship support to degreeseeking<br />

students who currently participate in<br />

the men’s baseball program.<br />

Richard McIntyre, Sr. Scholarship. William<br />

and Emily Turner, both Class of 2006, established<br />

this fund to honor Emily’s late father,<br />

a proud supporter of <strong>Butler</strong> and the athletics<br />

department. Recipients are full-time students<br />

who are selected in alternate years from the<br />

men’s golf team and from the cheerleading<br />

squad.<br />

John C. Parry Athletic Scholarship. John<br />

Parry served as <strong>Butler</strong>’s athletic director from<br />

1990 to 2006, the longest tenure at one school<br />

of any NCAA Division I athletic director in<br />

Indiana. The <strong>University</strong> established this scholarship<br />

upon his retirement. It provides financial<br />

support to a full-time student who competes in<br />

a <strong>Butler</strong> varsity sport. Consistent with NCAA<br />

and <strong>Butler</strong> policy, the recipient shall receive this<br />

scholarship based on his or her athletic ability.<br />

Dean Herbert F. Schwomeyer Scholarship.<br />

Dr. Stephen Hardin, Class of 1969, established<br />

this scholarship fund to honor Dr. Herbert<br />

F. Schwomeyer, retired professor of physical<br />

education and former dean of men at <strong>Butler</strong>.<br />

Dr. Schwomeyer passed away on March 11,<br />

2011 at the age of 92. This scholarship is given<br />

annually to a deserving student selected by the<br />

athletics department.<br />

Section 12 Athletics Annual Award. The<br />

holders of Section 12, Row E in Hinkle Fieldhouse<br />

established this annual award to benefit a<br />

student athlete. The recipient will be a full-time<br />

student in good academic standing who is a<br />

member of a <strong>Butler</strong> athletic team. Financial<br />

need will be used as a consideration. The<br />

donors prefer that the recipient has demonstrated<br />

an interest in organized social activities<br />

at <strong>Butler</strong> (Greek house). The award is to be<br />

applied toward tuition for the academic year in<br />

which it is granted, and the donors request that<br />

the recipient visit Section 12 Row E during a<br />

home <strong>Butler</strong> basketball game.<br />
