recognized Greek organization, show financial<br />

need and preferably reside in Indiana.<br />

Raymond R. and Margaret E. Miller Scholarship.<br />

This fund was established by annuities<br />

that Mr. and Mrs. Miller had with the <strong>University</strong>.<br />

Raymond Miller earned a master’s degree<br />

in education and theology from <strong>Butler</strong> in 1920.<br />

He was a teacher, principal, superintendent,<br />

pastor and professor — always with the support<br />

of his wife Margaret Threlkeld Miller. This<br />

scholarship provides tuition support to deserving<br />

students pursuing studies in education or the<br />

ministry.<br />

Minority Scholarship Fund for COE. This<br />

endowed fund was established in 2006 to<br />

provide scholarship support for minority<br />

students pursuing a degree in education.<br />

Joseph M. and Edna H. Nygaard Endowed<br />

Scholarship. This fund was established by Dr.<br />

Joseph M. Nygard, former dean of the College<br />

of Education, and his late first wife Edna.<br />

Nygaard created and was the first director of<br />

the Experiential Program for Preparing School<br />

Principals (EPPSP). He is widely respected for<br />

his expertise in school law and is a recipient of<br />

the prestigious <strong>Butler</strong> Medal. The fund supports<br />

the Joseph M. Nygaard Endowed Scholarship<br />

and the Joseph M. Nygaard Community<br />

Service Award. The scholarship is awarded<br />

annually to provide tuition assistance to education<br />

students enrolled in EPPSP, and selection<br />

is based on recommendations from the College<br />

of Education. The Community Service Award<br />

is given annually to an education student who<br />

has demonstrated scholarship, leadership and<br />

service to the <strong>University</strong> and community.<br />

Donald Pike and Janet Pike Off Scholarships.<br />

Donald H. Pike loved music, flying and <strong>Butler</strong>.<br />

The 1950 graduate devoted much of his time<br />

to the marching band; in fact, his tie to the<br />

marching Bulldogs was so strong, he played<br />

with the band for a year after graduation and<br />

announced the band programs at football<br />

games for the next 10 years. The Donald Pike<br />

award is given to a student in the College of<br />

Business, with preference to a member of the<br />

Marching Band. Janet Pike Off, a 1958 education<br />

graduate who also received her master’s<br />

degree from the <strong>University</strong>, taught elementary<br />

school for more than 30 years. While at <strong>Butler</strong>,<br />

<strong>Butler</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

she played glockenspiel in the Marching Band,<br />

and she remained involved through the Alumni<br />

Board and other activities. The Janet Pike Off<br />

award is given to an education student, with<br />

preference to a member of the Marching Band.<br />

This double scholarship fund was established<br />

by Mr. Pike’s son, Darrell, on behalf of the family<br />

in memory of his late father and his aunt.<br />

Helen M. Off Scholarship. Helen Off graduated<br />

from Madame Blaker’s Teachers College,<br />

which in 1929 merged with the Department<br />

of Education at <strong>Butler</strong> to become the College<br />

of Education. Based on her deep interest in<br />

the education of young people and her love for<br />

<strong>Butler</strong> <strong>University</strong>, she endowed a scholarship<br />

for an outstanding education student who<br />

demonstrates need, merit and leadership<br />

qualities, with preference given to primary<br />

education majors.<br />

Mildred Orr Scholarship. A 1931 <strong>Butler</strong><br />

graduate of the College of Education, Mildred<br />

Bokerman Orr was an educator in Indianapolis<br />

for 42 years. She was honored many times by<br />

various professional education organizations<br />

and associations and gave countless hours in<br />

volunteer service to her profession. Many of<br />

her articles on teaching were published in the<br />

National Quarterly Journal of Educational<br />

Law and Administration. This scholarship,<br />

established through her estate, is for students<br />

enrolled in the College of Education who<br />

demonstrate financial need.<br />

James H. Otto Science Education Scholarship.<br />

James H. Otto, a nationally known figure in<br />

biology education textbooks, received a <strong>Butler</strong><br />

bachelor’s degree in 1934, master’s degree in<br />

1938 and honorary doctorate in 1968. His wife<br />

Eloise Byrkit Otto, Class of 1934, established<br />

this scholarship in his memory after he passed<br />

away in 1972. In 1973, Mr. Otto received the<br />

<strong>Butler</strong> Medal posthumously. This is an incentive<br />

scholarship awarded to two outstanding<br />

biology or science-teaching majors.<br />

Guy “Bill” and Helen Rhoton Scholarship<br />

Fund. Helen Rhoton earned her B.S. in Education<br />

from Ball State <strong>University</strong> in 1933 and her<br />

M.S. in Education from <strong>Butler</strong> <strong>University</strong> in<br />

1940. Mrs. Rhoton was a teacher for 35 years,<br />

the last 27 in the special education department<br />

of Miami Dade (FL) public schools. This<br />

scholarship was established from a bequest
