major components of the student’s coursework<br />

Why Study Theatre?<br />

• The Department of Theatre is fully<br />

accredited by NAST (The National<br />

Association of Schools of Theatre).<br />

• The Department of Theatre is dedicated<br />

to the exploration of the ever-evolving<br />

practices of international theatre through<br />

a structured approach to the histories,<br />

theories, techniques, processes and practice<br />

of performance.<br />

• With the practical conditions for theatre<br />

artists constantly evolving, the <strong>Butler</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> Department of Theatre offers<br />

students the experience, skill and initiative<br />

to navigate a rapidly changing environment<br />

and pursue their aspirations with determi<br />

nation and purpose. <strong>Butler</strong> Theatre’s<br />

distinctive, collaborative work extends<br />

beyond the curriculum offering a depth<br />

and breadth of research, practice and<br />

experience.<br />

• The curriculum is designed to educate the<br />

whole person and to prepare future theater<br />

artists to enter and transform the field or<br />

apply knowledge, communication and<br />

problem-solving skill regardless of their<br />

eventual profession. Within the frame<br />

of <strong>Butler</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s liberal education,<br />

our practice-based, international tradition<br />

surpasses a conventional academic<br />

approach bringing students into dialogue<br />

with extraordinary artists and institutions<br />

worldwide.<br />

• Complementing a faculty of international<br />

professionals, the department maintains<br />

relationships with significant guest artists,<br />

the Indiana Repertory Theatre, the Phoenix<br />

Theatre, and the Indianapolis Museum of<br />

Art. We continue a unique partnership<br />

with the Moscow Art Theatre School, as<br />

well as study programs in London, Prague<br />

and now New York. The <strong>Butler</strong> International<br />

Theatre Exchange (BITE) led to the<br />

development of the exciting new Christel<br />

DeHaan Visiting International Theatre<br />

Artist (VITA) program.<br />

• Our goal is to contribute to a community<br />

of citizen artists who are broadly and<br />

rigorously prepared to work effectively<br />

and innovatively across artistic approaches,<br />

venues and technologies, and by extension<br />

to engage in the continuing conversation<br />

about what it means to be human.<br />

• Communicate with accuracy, cogency and<br />

persuasiveness.<br />

• Create and present public performances in<br />

the theatre.<br />

• Display ability in visual and aural<br />

perception through theatre performance.<br />

• Display familiarity with the use and<br />

structure of language in playwriting.<br />

• Display a familiarity with a variety of<br />

theatre techniques.<br />

• Display ability to make assessments of<br />

quality in works of theatre.<br />
