Roda Selleck Scholarship. This scholarship<br />
was originally awarded to a Shortridge High<br />
School graduate determined by that school’s<br />
art department and the principal. Later, it<br />
was awarded in alternate years to students at<br />
<strong>Butler</strong> and the Herron School of Art. In the<br />
late 1960s, legal counsel determined that the<br />
Selleck Scholarship could be used solely for<br />
<strong>Butler</strong> students.<br />
J. Fenley Shepperd Endowed Scholarship.<br />
This fund provides general academic scholarships<br />
for students of the Christian Science<br />
religion as taught by Mary Baker Eddy. The<br />
Office of Financial Aid determines the number<br />
of recipients, their qualifications and the scholarship<br />
amounts. If for any reason a student who<br />
meets this preference cannot be identified, the<br />
scholarship is not awarded.<br />
Herbert Hill Smeltzer and Rebecca Bond<br />
Blackley Smeltzer Memorial Scholarship.<br />
The Smeltzers’ son, David, in their memory,<br />
created this general scholarship in 1998. Both<br />
were members of the Class of 1936. The<br />
scholarship is awarded to students based on<br />
academic achievement and financial need with<br />
preference to students who are completing their<br />
freshman year.<br />
Helen M. Smith Scholarship. This scholarship<br />
is made possible by a generous bequest from<br />
Helen Smith, Class of 1924. In her memory,<br />
the <strong>Butler</strong> <strong>University</strong> Board of Trustees designated<br />
the gift as an endowed scholarship fund.<br />
Reverend Jean McAnulty Smith Endowed<br />
Scholarship. Rev. Jean McAnulty Smith, Class<br />
of 1965, established this scholarship to provide<br />
financial support to full-time, African-American<br />
(including biracial) students with preference<br />
given to those from a single-parent home.<br />
More than one recipient may be named each<br />
year, and the scholarship is renewable.<br />
Student Opportunity Scholarship. Lori and<br />
the late Daniel Efroymson established this as a<br />
special fund to assist students who would not<br />
otherwise be able to attend <strong>Butler</strong> <strong>University</strong>.<br />
The scholarship is based on need and can be<br />
awarded to new or returning students, and it<br />
can be renewed for multiple years of attendance<br />
at <strong>Butler</strong>.<br />
Kevin and Beth Theile Family Scholarship.<br />
Kevin and Beth Theile established this scholarship<br />
on the 20th anniversary of their graduation<br />
from <strong>Butler</strong> to credit their alma mater<br />
for their relationship, for being instrumental<br />
in shaping their individual characters and for<br />
providing a solid foundation and essential tools<br />
for their careers and professional pursuits. The<br />
award goes to an incoming freshman and is<br />
renewable for up to four years as long as the<br />
student maintains a 3.0 grade point average.<br />
Chris Theofanis Memorial Scholarship.<br />
Known to many as “Mr. <strong>Butler</strong>,” Chris Theofanis<br />
graduated in 1952 and except for service<br />
during the Korean War, never left the <strong>University</strong>.<br />
He served <strong>Butler</strong> in many capacities related<br />
to public relations for 42 years. Very few were<br />
untouched by Theofanis’ smiling face, words<br />
of encouragement and “can-do” spirit. The<br />
Theofanis Scholarship was established shortly<br />
after his death in 1999 with gifts given in his<br />
memory. In fact, the Theofanis scholarship<br />
received the largest volume of donor response<br />
of any memorial scholarship in <strong>Butler</strong>’s history.<br />
Theofanis’ wife Katie is also a <strong>Butler</strong> graduate<br />
as are their three children and their children’s<br />
spouses.<br />
Bernard F. Topmiller Memorial Scholarship.<br />
This fund provides a scholarship to a student<br />
or students at <strong>Butler</strong> <strong>University</strong> and may be in<br />
addition to other scholarship assistance except<br />
when such aid is contrary to state law.<br />
Albert and Hazel R. Spikes Memorial<br />
Tibor Toth Memorial Scholarship. Tibor<br />
Scholarship. Albert Spikes was illiterate<br />
Toth, a native of Budapest, Hungary, and a<br />
throughout his life but nonetheless had a deep World War II veteran of the Hungarian military,<br />
