High School in Indianapolis. This scholarship<br />

benefits a <strong>Butler</strong> student or students who have<br />

expressed interest in teaching high school<br />

English.<br />

Mary Louise Blauvelt Wingenroth Academic<br />

Scholarship. This endowed scholarship honors<br />

the memory of Mary Louise Blauvelt Wingenroth,<br />

Class of 1934, who had a special interest<br />

in literature and languages. It is given to a<br />

female English or Spanish major.<br />

John Newcomb Wright Memorial Scholarship.<br />

John S. Wright, a botanist with Eli Lilly and<br />

Company, and Lectania Newcomb Wright,<br />

Class of 1892, established this fund in memory<br />

of their son, a former <strong>Butler</strong> student who died<br />

at age 25. (There is a scholarship in Lectania<br />

Wright’s memory as well.) Preference is given to<br />

English or economics majors.<br />

History<br />

History Scholarship — Anonymous. The<br />

principal donor of this scholarship wishes to<br />

remain anonymous. It benefits a full-time<br />

student enrolled at <strong>Butler</strong> as a history or<br />

anthropology major.<br />

Barnes/Madden “Move Ahead” Scholarship.<br />

Tracy Barnes, Class of 1998, and Virgil Madden,<br />

Class of 1980, established this fund to provide<br />

financial assistance to deserving <strong>Butler</strong> students.<br />

Two awards are given annually, one recipient<br />

majoring in computer science and the other<br />

majoring in political science or history.<br />

Recipients should be full- or part-time, African-<br />

American students with a grade point average<br />

between 2.0 and 3.0. They should be between<br />

their sophomore and senior years and are<br />

encouraged to volunteer with a local<br />

nonprofit organization.<br />

James F. Bash Memorial Scholarship. This<br />

scholarship provides support to an undergraduate<br />

student or students majoring in history and/<br />

or political science with interest in American<br />

history or American studies. Preference is given<br />

to students who maintain a 3.0 grade point<br />

average.<br />

Edward M. and Margery H. Bennett<br />

Endowed Scholarship. The Bennetts, both<br />

Class of 1952, established this scholarship to be<br />

<strong>Butler</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

awarded to a history major based on academic<br />

performance and financial need.<br />

Mary V. Black Memorial Scholarship Fund.<br />

This scholarship was established through a<br />

gift from the estate of Mary V. Black, who<br />

entered <strong>Butler</strong> at just 16 years of age. This fund<br />

provides scholarships for students majoring in<br />

English or history.<br />

Bernice Abbott Cope Scholarship. Bernice<br />

Abbott Cope, Class of 1927 and a charter<br />

member of <strong>Butler</strong>’s Alpha Chi Omega chapter,<br />

spent most of her life in service to her sorority<br />

and the needy worldwide. Through her estate,<br />

she established this scholarship for an undergraduate<br />

student who excels in the study of<br />

history.<br />

Paul W. Finney Endowed Scholarship. Paul<br />

W. Finney, Class of 1922, enjoyed a long and<br />

successful career in the insurance industry. This<br />

scholarship was established in his memory by<br />

his brother, Robert A. Finney, Class of 1928,<br />

and is for history majors selected on a basis<br />

of academic achievement and of sophomore<br />

standing or higher.<br />

Professor Emma Lou Thornbrough Student<br />

Scholarship. The late Professor John Hope<br />

Franklin, Classes of 1936 and 1939, was a<br />

renowned historian. His admiration for<br />

Professor Thornbrough, a member of the <strong>Butler</strong><br />

faculty from 1946 to 1983, led to valuable<br />

collaborations. Professor Franklin established<br />

this fund in her honor to benefit a deserving<br />

student who is majoring in history with a focus<br />

on American history. Preference is given to<br />

students who demonstrate financial need.<br />

Mathematics and Actuarial Sciences<br />

Robert B. Annis Student Improvement<br />

Endowed Scholarship. This fund benefits<br />

students who improve their cumulative grade<br />

point average during their sophomore or junior<br />

years studying science, mathematics or other<br />

closely related subjects. The Office of Financial<br />

Aid selects the recipient based solely on the<br />

student’s scholastic improvement.<br />

Robert B. Annis Endowed Scholarship. As<br />

the founder (in 1928) and owner of R.B. Annis<br />

Co., a precision instruments and magnetic<br />

devices firm, Mr. Annis was recognized<br />

worldwide as an expert in his field. This fund
