James D. Esamann Scholarship in Mathematics.<br />

Mr. Esamann created this fund through<br />

a generous gift from his estate. A member of<br />

the Class of 1950, he worked for Eli Lilly and<br />

Company for 30 years. This scholarship is to<br />

be awarded to students pursuing studies in<br />

mathematics.<br />

Dr. Daisy Marvel Jones Scholarship.<br />

Recipients are selected on the basis of academic<br />

excellence and financial need. First preference<br />

is given to candidates from the Metropolitan<br />

School District of Pike Township, Marion<br />

County, Indiana. Preference is also given to<br />

students majoring in mathematics education,<br />

including students in the College of Liberal<br />

Arts and Sciences who plan to complete<br />

certification requirements to teach or who are<br />

education majors with a primary emphasis on<br />

mathematics.<br />

Robert O. Whitesell Honor Award. This<br />

award is endowed by gifts from friends and<br />

business associates of the late Robert O. Whitesell,<br />

who provided thoughtful and visionary<br />

leadership for more than 40 years in the<br />

business community. Mr. Whitesell also was a<br />

valued alumnus, Class of 1939. Two students in<br />

the Department of Mathematics and Actuarial<br />

Science and two students in the Department of<br />

Physics will be honored annually.<br />

Modern Languages, Literatures<br />

and Cultures<br />

Karl G. Bottke Endowed Scholarship.<br />

Established by Dr. Karl G. Bottke, Class of<br />

1929, this scholarship is for undergraduate or<br />

graduate students enrolled in the College of<br />

Liberal Arts and Sciences who are majoring in<br />

a Romance language or other foreign language.<br />

Recipients other than first year students must<br />

have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0<br />

or better.<br />

students majoring in Spanish or French who<br />

maintain a grade point average of 3.5 or greater.<br />

McKenzie Family Scholarship. Stephen E.<br />

and Jill McCann McKenzie are both loyal<br />

alumni of <strong>Butler</strong>’s College of Business. Jill<br />

earned her degree in 1982, Steve, in 1983. The<br />

couple established this scholarship in 2003<br />

to assist future generations of <strong>Butler</strong> students<br />

in obtaining an education. It is awarded to a<br />

graduate of a public high school who is enrolled<br />

full-time at <strong>Butler</strong> with a double major in business<br />

and foreign language. Preference is given to<br />

students of color.<br />

Mary Louise Blauvelt Wingenroth Academic<br />

Scholarship. This endowed scholarship honors<br />

the memory of Mary Louise Blauvelt Wingenroth,<br />

Class of 1934, who had a special interest<br />

in literature and languages. It is given to a<br />

female English or Spanish major.<br />

Philosophy<br />

Frances A. Nakarai Scholarship. Charles<br />

F.T. Nakarai established this fund in 2001 to<br />

honor his mother Frances, a 1927 graduate<br />

who received her bachelor of arts in philosophy.<br />

The endowed fund provides support to an<br />

undergraduate student or students. Preference<br />

is given to a junior or senior majoring in philosophy<br />

who demonstrates financial need and who<br />

maintains a 3.0 grade point average. The Office<br />

of Financial Aid administers the scholarship.<br />

Physics and Astronomy<br />

Dr. Brian W. Murphy Astronomy and Astrophysics<br />

Scholarship. Dr. Murphy established<br />

this scholarship to provide financial assistance<br />

to students majoring in astronomy and astrophysics.<br />

The recipient may be an incoming<br />

first-year student or rising second-, third- or<br />

fourth-year student who has a cumulative 3.0<br />

grade point average. The scholarship is renewable.<br />

Faculty in the Department of Physics and<br />

Astronomy recommend a recipient annually to<br />

the Office of Financial Aid.<br />

Funke Memorial Scholarship. This fund<br />

honors the memories of Dr. Francis J. Funke,<br />

his wife Bertha and son John. Dr. Funke graduated<br />

magna cum laude from <strong>Butler</strong> in 1937.<br />

He enjoyed a distinguished teaching career and<br />

served several foreign language associations in<br />

leadership roles. Scholarships are awarded to<br />

The Katrina Roch Seitz Science Education<br />

Endowed Fund. Dr. Katrina Roch Seitz,<br />

Class of 1979, created this fund to support the<br />

natural sciences at <strong>Butler</strong>, including physics,<br />

astronomy, chemistry and biology. The fund<br />

may be used either as scholarship support for<br />

students or to host a scholar in residence at the<br />
