Doris Rushton Gilfoy Memorial Scholarship.<br />

Mrs. Gilfoy was a 1941 graduate from COE.<br />

In appreciation for the scholarship assistance<br />

she received at <strong>Butler</strong>, and in recognition of a<br />

lifetime as a professional educator, Mrs. Gilfoy<br />

established this scholarship through a bequest.<br />

The recipient must be enrolled in the College<br />

of Education and maintain a minimum 3.0<br />

grade point average.<br />

Joanna S., Peter John and Carolyn Guss<br />

Scholarship. Education was always important<br />

to the Guss family; Carolyn and her siblings,<br />

Joanna and Peter, lived near the <strong>University</strong> and<br />

attended many events there as they dreamed<br />

about one day becoming <strong>Butler</strong> students.<br />

Carolyn and Joanna graduated from <strong>Butler</strong> in<br />

1929 and 1932, respectively; Joanna received<br />

her master’s degree in 1933. Carolyn established<br />

this scholarship in honor of her departed sister<br />

and brother, a World War II veteran who died<br />

at a young age in a car accident. The Guss<br />

Scholarship is intended to encourage deserving<br />

students enrolled in the College of Education<br />

who have demonstrated the capacity to achieve<br />

education goals and the initiative to seek<br />

opportunities to further their progress.<br />

Mabel Garr Helmer Scholarship. Dorothy<br />

Garr Helmer, Class of 1928, established this<br />

fund in 1990 to honor the memory of her<br />

mother, who graduated from <strong>Butler</strong> in 1930,<br />

two years after her daughter. Mabel Helmer<br />

was a long-time teacher in the Kokomo and<br />

Indianapolis public schools. Scholarships<br />

are awarded to encourage deserving students<br />

enrolled in the College of Education who have<br />

demonstrated the capacity to achieve educational<br />

and professional goals and the initiative to<br />

seek opportunities to further their progress.<br />

Recipients should also have at least a 3.0 grade<br />

point average, be working toward a degree in<br />

education and need financial assistance.<br />

Dr. Daisy Marvel Jones Scholarship. Recipients<br />

are selected on the basis of academic excellence<br />

and financial need. First preference is given<br />

to candidates from the Metropolitan School<br />

District of Pike Township, Marion County,<br />

Indiana. Preference is also given to students<br />

majoring in mathematics education, including<br />

students in the College of Liberal Arts and<br />

Sciences who plan to complete certification<br />

requirements to teach or who are education<br />

majors with a primary emphasis on mathematics.<br />

Vivian L. and Daisy M. Jones Endowed<br />

Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a<br />

graduate student who is pursuing or intends to<br />

pursue an advanced degree; who is conducting<br />

or intends to conduct a worthwhile academic<br />

project or research study; who has achieved<br />

previous certification in elementary education<br />

or successful teaching experience at the<br />

elementary level; and who has formulated a<br />

plan of graduate study. The scholarship may<br />

be renewed upon application by the student.<br />

Knauff Scholarship in Education. Jerry J. and<br />

Mitzie Knauff established this scholarship to<br />

benefit students who are enrolled in the College<br />

of Education. Mr. Knauff attended <strong>Butler</strong> from<br />

fall 1959 to spring 1961; he holds degrees from<br />

Southwestern <strong>University</strong> and the South Texas<br />

A&M Law School. Mrs. Knauff is a graduate of<br />

Texas Tech <strong>University</strong>. The Office of Financial<br />

Aid administers the fund.<br />

Knauff Servant Leadership Award. Jerry J.<br />

and Mitzie Knauff, and Marty Moore established<br />

this scholarship to recognize students<br />

as servant leaders in community service and<br />

to promote the ideas of service to the entire<br />

educational community. The award benefits<br />

full-time students in the College of Education<br />

who consistently demonstrate a servant’s heart<br />

of leadership. Recipients receive the scholarship<br />

in their junior or senior year.<br />

Margaret Cooper Manuzzi Family Elementary<br />

Education Scholarship. Darlene C. and Nicola<br />

C. Manuzzi, and Timothy B. Manuzzi, Class<br />

of 1993, and Margaret Cooper Manuzzi, Class<br />

of 1992, established this endowed scholarship<br />

to benefit students in the College of Education.<br />

Recipients are selected during their sophomore<br />

or junior years and must have a minimum 2.75<br />

grade point average, be members of a nationally<br />

Kathleen Brown Hoffa Educational Scholarship.<br />

This fund was established as a bequest<br />

to the College of Education in 1981 from<br />

Kathleen Hoffa, a 1950 education graduate<br />

who taught junior high social studies in Marion<br />

County for many years. The fund provides<br />

undergraduate scholarships in the College of<br />

Education.<br />
