August S. and Gertrude Duesenberg<br />

Scholarship. Emil V. Cassady, Class of 1922,<br />

and Dorothy Duesenberg Cassady, Class of<br />

1929, established this scholarship by a bequest<br />

from their estate to honor Mrs. Cassady’s<br />

parents and the Duesenberg name. Mr.<br />

Duesenberg and his brother Fred were the<br />

co-designers and developers of the famous<br />

Duesenberg automobiles and racing cars<br />

manufactured in Indianapolis.<br />

John B. Dunn Speedway Scholarship. John<br />

B. Dunn, Class of 1977, established this scholarship<br />

for the benefit of graduates of Speedway<br />

(Indiana) High School who are full-time <strong>Butler</strong><br />

students in good standing. Mr. Dunn is a<br />

former chair of the <strong>Butler</strong> Board of Trustees<br />

and chaired the <strong>Butler</strong>Rising Campaign. A<br />

member of the Athletic Hall of Fame, he also<br />

has provided generous support to many sports<br />

at <strong>Butler</strong>.<br />

Robert Abraham Efroymson Memorial<br />

Scholarship. This is an endowed scholarship<br />

fund for minority students whose financial<br />

status would not otherwise allow them to<br />

attend <strong>Butler</strong>. The Moriah Fund established the<br />

scholarship in memory of Robert Efroymson,<br />

a lifelong Indianapolis resident, businessman,<br />

community leader and philanthropist.<br />

John Henry Ekengren Memorial Scholarship.<br />

This fund was established by a bequest from<br />

the estate of Elsie P. Ekengren in memory of her<br />

son, John. It is awarded to worthy students who<br />

demonstrate financial need.<br />

Edith R. Elrod Scholarship. Edith Elrod,<br />

Class of 1932, provided funds by bequest to<br />

establish financial aid for women attending the<br />

<strong>University</strong>.<br />

J. Richard Fernkas Memorial Scholarship.<br />

Mr. Fernkas’ family established this endowed<br />

scholarship in his memory. It is awarded to an<br />

incoming freshman based on need. Preference<br />

is given to students from Indianapolis Public<br />

Schools.<br />

in service to his country. The recipient of this<br />

scholarship shall have a parent who died while<br />

on active duty in the U.S. military or a U.S.<br />

police force. If no candidate meets this preference,<br />

the recipient shall be or have a parent<br />

who is disabled as a result of injuries received<br />

while on active duty in the U.S. military or a<br />

U.S. police force. If no candidate meets this<br />

preference the recipient shall have lost one or<br />

both parents to death.<br />

Gwen Fountain Endowed Scholarship.<br />

This scholarship honors the work of Gwen A.<br />

Fountain, <strong>Butler</strong>’s first female president. Dr.<br />

Fountain taught economics at <strong>Butler</strong> from<br />

1977 to 1996, when she was appointed<br />

associate provost of student learning and then<br />

dean of academic affairs. She served on 36<br />

<strong>University</strong> committees over 23 years while also<br />

volunteering in the Indianapolis community.<br />

This scholarship reflects the respect that Dr.<br />

Fountain generated among her <strong>Butler</strong> colleagues.<br />

It is awarded to a deserving <strong>Butler</strong> student, with<br />

a preference given to a sophomore, junior or<br />

senior with a cumulative grade point average<br />

of 3.0 or greater and who demonstrates<br />

financial need.<br />

Edna Lane Frazier Memorial Scholarship.<br />

Having a special interest in helping undergraduate<br />

students who desire to attain a<br />

college degree, Clarence Frazier, Class of 1935,<br />

established this scholarship in memory of his<br />

late wife Edna. She graduated in 1929 from the<br />

Eliza Blaker Teachers College, forerunner of<br />

<strong>Butler</strong>’s College of Education. The scholarship<br />

provides full or partial tuition assistance.<br />

Ruth French Scholarship. This fund was<br />

established by a bequest from the estate of Ruth<br />

French to benefit women at <strong>Butler</strong>.<br />

Dudley R. Gallahue Scholarship. This<br />

scholarship was established by a bequest from<br />

the estate of Dudley Gallahue, an outstanding<br />

figure in the social, civic and business life of<br />

Indianapolis. It is awarded based on financial<br />

need.<br />

Suzanne Dunham Fong Scholarship. <strong>Butler</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> President Bobby Fong and his wife<br />

Suzanne Dunham Fong established this fund<br />

to honor her commitment to the growth and<br />

education of young people and to recognize<br />

the challenges she lived in losing her father<br />

Lova Conn Garriott Memorial Scholarship.<br />

Established through a generous gift from Mrs.<br />

Garriott’s estate, this scholarship is designated<br />

for financially needy undergraduate students in<br />

any area of academic study.<br />
