Counseling<br />
Arthur F. Krueger Scholarship. Mr. Krueger<br />
received his master of arts degree from the<br />
College of Education in 1945. This fund was<br />
established through the College of Education<br />
to honor his memory. Preference is given<br />
to students who are studying to be guidance<br />
counselors.<br />
College of Communication<br />
Awards<br />
*The following is a list of the current<br />
scholarships. Most are used to underwrite<br />
<strong>Butler</strong> <strong>University</strong> financial aid programs and<br />
cannot be applied for directly unless otherwise<br />
indicated.<br />
Angelo Angelopolous Scholarship. This<br />
award was established by friends of Angelo<br />
Angelopulous, former Collegian editor, a 1940<br />
alumnus and Indianapolis journalist. It is<br />
presented to the student who made the most<br />
outstanding contribution to campus journalism<br />
in the past year.<br />
Francis Harold (Hal) Barron Book Fund.<br />
Hal was a 1973 graduate of COE and was a<br />
valued and dedicated educator in <strong>Butler</strong>’s Radio<br />
and Television Department for 20 years. The<br />
fund will provide a stipend to <strong>Butler</strong> students<br />
to purchase books for their studies at <strong>Butler</strong>.<br />
Preference will be given to students studying<br />
about media and communications.<br />
Howard C. Caldwell Jr. Scholarship. Local<br />
television station WRTV Channel 6 established<br />
this scholarship to honor anchorman Howard<br />
Caldwell, Class of 1950. Mr. Caldwell is a former<br />
member of <strong>Butler</strong>’s Board of Trustees and<br />
comes from a long line of <strong>Butler</strong> alumni. The<br />
scholarship is awarded to rising members of the<br />
junior and senior classes who demonstrate high<br />
promise in broadcast journalism. The head of<br />
the Department of Media Arts and other members<br />
of the department as appropriate make the<br />
selection. Financial need is a consideration.<br />
Jerry Chapman Memorial Scholarship. This<br />
fund was established by friends and family of<br />
Jerry Chapman, Class of 1950, for junior or<br />
senior year media arts majors. Financial need is<br />
a consideration. Mr. Chapman enjoyed a distinguished<br />
career in broadcasting and community<br />
service. He assisted <strong>Butler</strong> in developing its<br />
television curriculum.<br />

August and Esther Cooreman Liberal Arts<br />
and Sciences Scholarship. Daniel Cooreman,<br />
Class of 1976, established this scholarship to<br />
honor his parents for their moral and financial<br />
support, which enabled him to earn a journalism<br />
degree and pursue a successful career at The<br />
New York Times. Recipients shall be students<br />
enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts and<br />
Sciences with preference given to journalism<br />
majors. They must have a cumulative 3.0 grade<br />
point average.<br />
Dr. Kenneth Creech Scholarship. Scott<br />
Bridge, Class of 1982 M.S. ’91, and his wife<br />
Maryann Bridge established this fund to honor<br />
Kenneth Creech, chair of the media arts department<br />
and holder of the Fairbanks Chair in<br />
Communications at <strong>Butler</strong>. Preference is given<br />
to sophomores, juniors or seniors majoring in<br />
media arts who have a grade point average of<br />
3.0 or better.<br />
Nicholas M. Cripe Scholarship. Former<br />
students, colleagues and friends of the late Dr.<br />
Cripe established this fund upon his retirement<br />
in recognition of his many years of service<br />
to <strong>Butler</strong>. Nationally recognized in his field,<br />
he was a well-loved professor of speech and a<br />
debate coach. This award is made annually to<br />
students majoring in speech or who are actively<br />
participating in debate or public speaking<br />
programs.<br />
John Davies Family Endowed Scholarship.<br />
John D. and Margaret S. Davies have generously<br />
underwritten this scholarship for full-time<br />
students who maintain a grade point average of<br />
at least 2.0, demonstrate financial need and are<br />
enrolled in the College of Business or majoring<br />
in journalism in the Eugene S. Pulliam School<br />
of Journalism in the College of Liberal Arts<br />
and Sciences. The donors hope that a minority<br />
student who meets all of the criteria will receive<br />
the award at least once every four years;<br />
however, they do not wish that the scholarship<br />
be awarded exclusively to minority students.<br />
William E. Fagan Scholarship. Established by<br />
Children’s Television International, the Fagan<br />
Award honors the late William E. Fagan, an<br />
Indiana native, <strong>Butler</strong> radio and television<br />
graduate, and pioneer in educational broadcasting.<br />
It is awarded to an outstanding junior media<br />
arts major who should maintain a 3.3 grade<br />
point average in the major and a cumulative<br />
grade point average of 3.0.
