UPS Scholarship. The UPS (United Parcel<br />
Service) Foundation of Atlanta, Ga., has been<br />
a generous supporter of independent higher<br />
education for many years. UPS provides funds<br />
through the Independent Colleges of Indiana<br />
Foundation that financially support deserving<br />
<strong>Butler</strong> students in a variety of academic<br />
disciplines.<br />
Rex and Ruth Van Trees Scholarship. This<br />
fund was established through a charitable gift<br />
annuity by Mr. Van Trees, a 1949 graduate of<br />
<strong>Butler</strong>’s journalism program. Ruth E. Redding<br />
Van Trees, a teacher, graduated from Northwest<br />
Nazarene College and later enrolled in elective<br />
classes at <strong>Butler</strong>. This scholarship is awarded<br />
to students who demonstrate financial need<br />
and are not members of a Greek-letter social<br />
organization.<br />
Howard and Joan Waits Scholarship. Howard<br />
and Joan Waits established this fund to provide<br />
financial assistance to deserving students. It is<br />
administered by the Financial Aid Office, with<br />
first preference given to a member of Sigma<br />
Chi fraternity and second preference given<br />
to a member of a <strong>Butler</strong> <strong>University</strong> sorority.<br />
John Henry Weidner Endowed Scholarship<br />
for Altruism. This fund was created by <strong>Butler</strong>’s<br />
chapter of the John Henry Weidner Foundation<br />
for Altruism to support and honor <strong>Butler</strong> undergraduates<br />
who exemplify Weidner’s altruistic<br />
spirit and unselfish regard for the welfare of<br />
others. Mr. Weidner was a Dutch citizen who<br />
was living in France when World War II began.<br />
He and his group of rescuers helped save more<br />
than a thousand people fleeing the Nazis. In<br />
2006, the <strong>Butler</strong> <strong>University</strong> Student Sociology<br />
Association founded the first collegiate chapter<br />
of the national Weidner Foundation.<br />
Theresa K. Weinberg Scholarship. This fund<br />
memorializes the life of Theresa K. Weinberg,<br />
who died suddenly at age 20 in September<br />
1993 at the start of her junior year at <strong>Butler</strong>.<br />
It is intended to encourage students who, in<br />
the first year of their undergraduate careers,<br />
have shown the capacity to achieve educational<br />
and professional goals and who, by virtue of<br />
their concern for the welfare and well-being<br />
of others, have made a positive and special<br />
contribution to the life of the <strong>University</strong><br />
community.<br />
Cecil O. and Dr. Begen Wells Freshman<br />
Academic Scholarship. This fund was established<br />
through a generous estate gift from the<br />
Wellses in recognition of their commitment<br />
to <strong>Butler</strong> <strong>University</strong>, which, in his words, “…<br />
has helped this whole city grow and has made<br />
this community an outstanding one with a rich<br />
community life.” These merit-based scholarships<br />
are awarded to full-time students who demonstrate<br />
qualities and high standards that make<br />
them deserving of special recognition.<br />
Dwight F. and Eleanor McClain Whitmire<br />
Memorial Scholarship. Dwight F. and Eleanor<br />
McClain Whitmire were both <strong>Butler</strong> alumni:<br />
Dwight was a mathematics major who graduated<br />
in 1925, and Eleanor received a master’s<br />
degree from the College of Education in 1948.<br />
This scholarship was established by a gift from<br />
Eleanor’s estate to provide financial assistance to<br />
worthy students pursuing their studies at <strong>Butler</strong><br />
<strong>University</strong>.<br />
Beth Arvan Wiggins Book Fund. A 1993<br />
graduate in public and corporate communications,<br />
Beth Arvan Wiggins established this<br />
endowed book fund in 2006 to help enhance<br />
the learning experiences of future <strong>Butler</strong><br />
students. Recipients of the book scholarship<br />
will demonstrate financial need and have a<br />
cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0.<br />
Harold D. Wilkins Jr. Scholarship. The<br />
<strong>Butler</strong> <strong>University</strong> Alumni Association established<br />
this scholarship in recognition of Harold<br />
Wilkins’ outstanding service to his alma mater.<br />
The scholarship is awarded to a junior with a<br />
2.5 grade point average or above and is<br />
renewable for the student’s senior year.<br />
George Boyd Wilson Scholarship. This<br />
fund was established in memory of George B.<br />
Wilson, Class of 1941, by a bequest from the<br />
estate of his mother, Linnie Boyd Wilson.<br />
Basil L. and Mary E. Wimmer Scholarship.<br />
This scholarship was created as a tribute to<br />
Basil L. Wimmer, Class of 1946, and his wife<br />
Mary E. Wimmer. Recipients of Wimmer<br />
scholarships will demonstrate the capacity to<br />
achieve educational and professional goals and<br />
will require financial assistance.<br />
