The Robert O. Whitesell Honor Award.<br />
This award is endowed by gifts from friends<br />
and business associates of the late Robert O.<br />
Whitesell, who provided thoughtful and visionary<br />
leadership for more than 40 years in the<br />
business community. Mr. Whitesell also was<br />
a valued alumnus of <strong>Butler</strong> <strong>University</strong>, Class<br />
of 1939. Two students in the Department of<br />
Mathematics and Actuarial Science and two<br />
students in the Department of Physics will be<br />
honored annually.<br />
Political Science<br />
Barnes/Madden “Move Ahead” Scholarship.<br />
Tracy Barnes, Class of 1998, and Virgil Madden,<br />
Class of 1980, established this fund to provide<br />
financial assistance to deserving <strong>Butler</strong> students.<br />
Two awards are given annually, one recipient<br />
majoring in computer science and the other<br />
majoring in political science or history.<br />
Recipients should be full- or part-time, African-<br />
American students with a grade point average<br />
between 2.0 and 3.0. They should be between<br />
their sophomore and senior years and are<br />
encouraged to volunteer with a local nonprofit<br />
organization.<br />
James F. Bash Memorial Scholarship. This<br />
scholarship provides support to an undergraduate<br />
student or students majoring in history and/<br />
or political science, expressing an interest in<br />
American History or American Studies.<br />
Preference is give students who maintain<br />
a 3.0 grade point average.<br />
Dale Hathaway Social Action Endowed<br />
Scholarship. This scholarship provides financial<br />
assistance to deserving <strong>Butler</strong> students,<br />
with preference given to those in the College of<br />
Liberal Arts and Sciences. The political science<br />
department will recommend students who<br />
demonstrate a commitment to peace and social<br />
justice. This scholarship memorializes the life<br />
and convictions of Dale Hathaway, professor of<br />
political science from 1990 until his untimely<br />
death in 2002. He was a dedicated teacher,<br />
scholar activist, husband, mentor and friend,<br />
always searching for ways to hasten the arrival<br />
of justice and the betterment of the community.<br />
His scholarly research focused on the possibilities<br />
for ordinary people to improve their lives<br />
through participation and organization.<br />
<strong>Butler</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />
Pre-Law<br />
Omar S. and Harriet D. Bruner Jr. Scholarship.<br />
This endowment, established in 1983 by<br />
Omar S. “Buck” Bruner Jr., class of 1948 and<br />
his late first wife Harriet, provides scholarships<br />
to students majoring in business administration,<br />
economics or pre-law who need financial<br />
assistance.<br />
Omar S. Bruner Sr. Memorial Scholarship.<br />
This scholarship was established by Omar S.<br />
“Buck” Bruner Jr., class of 1948 and his late<br />
first wife Harriet, as a memorial to his father<br />
and to benefit <strong>Butler</strong> students who plan to<br />
enter law school, are in high academic standing<br />
and need financial assistance. Omar Bruner Sr.<br />
had a desire to help others obtain the formal<br />
education he never had the opportunity to<br />
acquire.<br />
A.G. Emhardt Family Memorial Scholarship.<br />
The purpose of this fund is to encourage<br />
students to utilize <strong>Butler</strong>’s excellent resources<br />
in pursuit of studies in preparation for future<br />
careers. The award will be made based on financial<br />
need as well as the conduct and character<br />
of the applicants; preference will be given to<br />
students preparing for law careers. This award<br />
was established by a bequest from the estate of<br />
Ruth Emhardt, an alumna and Indianapolis<br />
educator.<br />
A. Leroy Portteus Scholarship Fund. This<br />
endowment fund was established by the estate<br />
of Gene Lois Portteus Branigin to honor the<br />
memory of her father, Dr. A. Leroy Portteus, a<br />
physician and <strong>Butler</strong> graduate, class of 1900. In<br />
the early 1900s, Dr. Portteus was president of<br />
the Indiana State Medical Association and went<br />
on to serve under President Eisenhower on the<br />
National House Conference on Children and<br />
Youth. Scholarships benefit students enrolled in<br />
a pre-law curriculum.<br />
Gordon E. Tabor Endowed Scholarship<br />
Fund. Stephen Preusse, class of 1987, and<br />
family members and friends of attorney<br />
Gordon Tabor established this scholarship in<br />
his memory to provide financial assistance to<br />
students enrolled in pre-law studies.<br />

Kathryn Bromley Scholarship. Kathryn<br />
Bromley received her degree from <strong>Butler</strong> in<br />
