Traffic conditions<br />

The road geometry <strong>of</strong> the intersection is such that traffic<br />

approaching form the west on Broadway are provided with two<br />

lanes for access onto Pitt Street and two designated lanes for those<br />

wishing to continue north on George Street. There are three lanes<br />

on the Lee Street approach to the intersection, <strong>of</strong> which one is<br />

designated as a right-turn lane, one is a shared through and rightturn<br />

lane, and the kerbside lane is a through (into George Street)<br />

and left-turn lane (into Quay Street). Four lanes are provided on the<br />

Pitt Street approach to the intersection <strong>of</strong> which the kerbside lane is<br />

designated as a left-turn lane into Lee Street. Quay Street is one<br />

way westbound.<br />

Despite the relative complexity, and unusual geometry <strong>of</strong> the<br />

intersection, all pedestrian and vehicular movements are controlled<br />

by a relatively simple three phase signal operation. The other<br />

notable feature <strong>of</strong> this intersection is the wide paved area between<br />

Pitt Street and Lee Street, behind which is an access road to the<br />

Central Station railway concourse.<br />

Wentworth Avenue is a wide street connecting Elizabeth Street and<br />

Oxford Street. There are generally two trafficable lanes operating in<br />

both directions over its length, with additional capa<strong>city</strong> in the form <strong>of</strong><br />

designated right turn and or left turn lanes provided at Goulburn<br />

Street (both directions), Elizabeth Street (southbound) and on the<br />

approach to Oxford Street (westbound). Parking is generally<br />

permitted on both sides <strong>of</strong> the road.<br />

Prince Albert Road between College Street and Macquarie Street<br />

currently provides for three northbound lanes and two southbound<br />

lanes which widen to three lanes on the approach to the College<br />

Street intersection. The southbound kerbside lane is almost<br />

exclusively used as a left-turn lane. On the College Street approach<br />

to Prince Albert Road there are two northbound lanes and a short<br />

right-turn lane. College Street has a carriageway width that is<br />

typical <strong>of</strong> a six-lane road. A separated two-way cycleway is located<br />

along the western side <strong>of</strong> the street.<br />

Macquarie Street<br />

Bent Street and<br />

Bridge Street<br />

The southern approach on Macquarie Street at Bridge Street is<br />

designated with a single right, a single through and a single left-turn<br />

lane. Both the through and right lanes extend back to Bent Street,<br />

whilst a short length (40 metre) <strong>of</strong> designated left-turn lane is<br />

provided between Phillip Lane and Bridge Street. During the<br />

morning and afternoon peak periods, left-turning vehicles <strong>of</strong>ten<br />

queue well beyond the left-turn lane, leading to congestion and<br />

delays to northbound through traffic. This affects the overall<br />

efficiency <strong>of</strong> the intersection.<br />
