After starter-motor bolts are out, slide the starter forward out of
housing, then lower its nose to remove it.
torque-converter studs have a very close
fit, so mark them so they can be installed
in the original position when the time
comes. This is one variable you'll know is
right if thngs don't click together at
installation time.
Secure All the Loose Parts-If you don't
want to leave your jack under the transmission
or want to free your car so it can
be rolled, support the transmission so it
doesn't fall when you lower the jack.
Wire coat hangers work well for this job
and for supporting the exhaust system.
With your engine out and hanging in
mid-air, begin stripping it down as described
in the teardown chapter. You did

store them in a secure place where they
won't get mixed in with your lawn
mower, motorcycle, snowmobile or any
other parts you may have lying around.

car or bed of your truck is a good place
to store them.
