The questionnaire was translated into Portuguese to facilitate the<br />

datagathering <strong>of</strong> colleagues in Portugal and Brazil.<br />

3. Target Audience and Participants<br />

In order to limit the population <strong>of</strong> the study the criterion used in selecting<br />

the participating countries was the inclusion <strong>of</strong> those countries members <strong>of</strong><br />

the Latin American Committee <strong>of</strong> <strong>Music</strong> <strong>Therapy</strong>: Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay,<br />

Columbia, Chile, Cuba, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela. It was decided to<br />

include Spain and Portugal to <strong>of</strong>fer an overall view <strong>of</strong> <strong>Music</strong> <strong>Therapy</strong> Clinical<br />

Practice in the Spanish and Portuguese speaking languages.<br />

The data gathering process was begun with the collaboration <strong>of</strong> <strong>Music</strong><br />

<strong>Therapy</strong> Associations in the participants countries, delegates <strong>of</strong> the Comité<br />

Latinoamericano de <strong>Music</strong>oterapia, Commission on Etichs and Research <strong>of</strong><br />

the <strong>World</strong> <strong>Federation</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Music</strong> <strong>Therapy</strong>, University <strong>of</strong> Cadiz. The<br />

questionnaires were distributed through normal mail and email. The<br />

respondents <strong>of</strong> the questionnaire were certificate music therapist.<br />

The research project was introduced at the V Foro Rioplatense de<br />

<strong>Music</strong>oterapia (Montevideo, August 1998) and at the II Encuentro<br />

Latinoamericano de <strong>Music</strong>oterapia (Rio de Janeiro, November 1998). The<br />

questionnaire was sent by post and email during July - December 1998.<br />

Follows up letter were sent in September and December 1998, and the<br />

closing date was May 1999.<br />

RESULTS<br />

1. Demographic Data: Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Issues<br />

There were 119 respondents to the questionnaire: Argentine 74; Brazil 15;<br />

Columbia 3; Chile 1; Peru 6; Uruguay 5; Portugal 2; Spain 13. There were<br />

no responses from Cuba, Mexico and Venezuela. 89 respondents were<br />

female (75.4%) and 29 (24.6%) male. The age-range <strong>of</strong> responses is between<br />

21 and 66 years old. The 26-30 age group represents the highest<br />

concentration <strong>of</strong> respondents with 32 (29.9%) and the 36-40 age group with<br />

20 (18.8%). The average <strong>of</strong> respondents was 33.9 years. Data for<br />

respondents' years <strong>of</strong> experience reveals that the 0-5 years category<br />
