SCANDINAVIAN POINT OF VIEW:<br />

Entry Criteria:<br />

Skills and qualifications in music<br />

Awareness through literature study <strong>of</strong> music therapy<br />

Informal experience in clinical situations<br />

Suitability from the point <strong>of</strong> view <strong>of</strong> personality<br />

Course criteria:<br />

• Studies in music including piano, guitar, percussion, improvisation,<br />

notation, composition and arranging, and auditory skills<br />

• Theoretical studies including psychology, theory <strong>of</strong> therapy, theory <strong>of</strong><br />

music therapy, research methods<br />

• Clinical pathology<br />

• Studies in music therapy methods including group and<br />

individual therapy methods, methods <strong>of</strong> assessment, methods <strong>of</strong> analysis<br />

and evaluation, methods <strong>of</strong> case reporting<br />

•• Experiential Training in <strong>Music</strong> <strong>Therapy</strong> including some form<br />

<strong>of</strong> personal therapy and group therapy, and group dynamics<br />

• Practica: undertaking clinical placements supervised by qualified music<br />

therapists<br />

• Ethical and pr<strong>of</strong>essional studies<br />

Examination Criteria:<br />

• Practical, theoretical and music examinations<br />

• Examination by external censors/examiners. A percentage <strong>of</strong> the course<br />

should be externally and independently assessed.<br />

• Examination <strong>of</strong> clinical competence<br />

Discussion<br />

The discussion focused on external examination. The external examiner<br />

examines alongside the internal examiner. The external examiner can fail a<br />

student, against the wishes <strong>of</strong> the internal examiner. However, it is the<br />

decision <strong>of</strong> the university whether the external examiner’s assessment<br />

carries sufficient weight to fail a student. Clinical work is evaluated by the<br />

external examiner throughout the year. The external examiner is <strong>of</strong>ten in<br />

partnership with the internal examiner. For instance, the external<br />
