FRANCE PART 3 (i): COMPANY ANALYSIS: MAJOR PLAYERS<br />

The two contracts signed in April 2000 serve a total of 105,000 people in the Mecklenburg-Pomerania<br />

region of North East Germany. The concession contract is with an association of communes with<br />

70,000 inhabitants and involves the provision of 4 million m 3 of water and the treatment of 1.3 million<br />

m 3 of wastewater per annum. The Gustrow contract, signed in April 2000, is for the design,<br />

construction and management of a wastewater plant to treat 2.4 million m 3 per year.<br />

1994 Goslar 25 year concession 55,000, sewerage<br />

Eurawasser has gained a 25 year sewerage contract for Goslar (Lower Saxony) from April 1996.<br />

Eurawasser controls a holding of 100% of the management and 49% of assets in terms of equity<br />

stakes. The facility will treat 98,000 people equivalents; 55,000 people, 43,000 for industry.<br />

2000 Kriensen, 25 year concession 12,000 water and sewerage<br />

In February 2000, a concession was signed for services to the city of Kriensen.<br />

2001 Schwerin Participation 100,000 water & sewerage<br />

Suez will participate in up to 49% of the water company following a two year transition period (called a<br />

‘silent participation’) in the city’s multi-utility.<br />

Great Britain<br />

Suez’s sold 72.5% of its 100% stake in Ondeo Services UK in May 2002 (see separate entry for<br />

Northumbrian <strong>Water</strong>). The remaining stake was sold to the Onmtario Teacher’s Pension Plan for €377<br />

million in April <strong>2005</strong> for a capital gain of €260 million.<br />

Turkey<br />

1997 Antalya 10 year O&M 535,000 water & wastewater<br />

This is a delegated management contract for the Antalya <strong>Water</strong> and Sewerage Authority. Suez beat<br />

Thames, United Utilities/Bechtel and SAUR for the contract. ANTSU will be a 50/50 joint stock<br />

company with ENKA. The contract involves customer billing and wastewater treatment. The city’s<br />

population is forecast to grow to 960,000 by <strong>2005</strong>.<br />

Morocco<br />

1997 Casablanca 30 year management 3.8 million water & sewerage<br />

Lyonnaise des Eaux de Casablanca (LYDEC) manages the Urban Community of Casablanca<br />

contract, covering 4 million people. This represents 25% of the Moroccan market, with a 1,000km 2<br />

area and 23 urban communities covered. Ondeo Services will be responsible for water and sewerage<br />

and Elyo for electricity. 14% of LYDEC's equity was sold on the Casablanca Bourse on 18 th July <strong>2005</strong>,<br />

and 80% of the shares were bought by local investors. Suez continues to hold 51% of LYDEC, with<br />

the remaining 35% being held by Moroccan institutions.<br />

The water contract is worth DH.5 billion (US$517 million) for the expansion and upgrading of water<br />

distribution and treatment. Over 80% of the population is currently connected, which will increase to<br />

85% in 5 years, 90% in 10 years and 100% in 20 years, with price rises in years 2 and 3. The<br />

wastewater contract is worth DH.16 billion (US$1.6 billion). It involves the construction of three<br />

WWTW's, including recovery systems and the creation and extension of the sewerage network in<br />

development zones of Western Casablanca. Currently, 5% of the population is connected to the<br />

sewerage network. Leakages of 0.2 million m 3 per annum have been dealt with since 1997,<br />

equivalent to 5% of water delivered.<br />

2000 Oum Er Rbia 30 year concession Bulk water provision<br />

The bulk water supply concession for one third of Casablanca was awarded to Elyo and Ondeo<br />

Services. €30.5 million will be spent on the rehabilitation and upgrading of bulk water supplies<br />

delivering 55million m 3 of water to the city, generating €305 million over the concession’s life.<br />
