<strong>2005</strong> Marakech 5 year DBO 1 million wastewater treatment<br />

The DBO calls for a wastewater treatment facility to enter service by the end of <strong>2006</strong>. The facility will<br />

be funded by an EIB loan and Degremont will receive €9 million for its role.<br />

Algeria<br />

<strong>2005</strong> Taksebt 5 year DBO 2 million water treatment<br />

A 605,000 m 3 per day water treatment facility, operated on behalf of SNC Lavalin. The facility is due<br />

to enter service by 2008 and Degremont will gain €38 million from the contract.<br />

<strong>2005</strong> Athmania 5 year DBO 1 million water treatment<br />

A 262,500 m 3 per day water treatment facility, operated on behalf of Algérienne des Eaux. The facility<br />

is due to enter service by 2007 and Degremont will gain €24 million from the contract.<br />

Saudi Arabia<br />

In June 2002, Suez signed a contract with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to oversee a €10 billion, 10<br />

year investment programme for the development of water and wastewater in the Mecca Province. The<br />

Mecca Province has 7.5 million inhabitants and three major urban areas: the Holy City, Jeddah and<br />

Taif. In Jeddah, the second largest city in the country (2.6 million people) there is a chronic shortage<br />

of water resources and less than 20% of the city is equipped with a sewer system.<br />

Jordan<br />

2002 Northern Jordan 25 year BOT 2.5 million water & wastewater<br />

The contract, announced in July 2002, is designed to bring new water resources into the North of the<br />

country. It represents an evolution of the 1999 O&M contract for Greater Amman. 60% of the<br />

US$154 million capital spending will come from US AID as a grant. The Khirbet as-Samra treatment<br />

facility will replace an existing waste stabilisation pond treatment system, serving about 2.5 million<br />

residents in Amman and surrounding towns. Construction started in December 2003, with the<br />

consortium operating the plant for 22 years after it comes into service in <strong>2006</strong>. The facility will handle<br />

268,000m 3 per day of wastewater and the contract will generate revenues of US$15 million per<br />

annum.<br />

Cameroon<br />

2000 SNEC 20 year concession 5.3 million water provision<br />

A 51% stake in SNEC (Société National d'Eau du Cameroon) was acquired in May 2000 as part of a<br />

concession award. The contract includes the upgrading and rehabilitation of water distribution<br />

systems in a number of towns and cities, including Douala and Yaounde, which account for 43% of<br />

Cameroon’s population. Turnover will be €24 million pa, with total investments of €300 million.<br />

North America<br />

United <strong>Water</strong> Resources (UWR) was founded in 1869 and was floated in 1986. In 1994, UWR<br />

merged with Suez’s General <strong>Water</strong>works Company, giving Suez a 30% holding in UWR. Until it was<br />

acquired by Suez, it was the second largest listed water services company in the US. Suez’s USA<br />

arm, Lyonnaise American Holdings acquired the remaining 67% of UWR’s equity that it did not hold in<br />

2000 and its 50% holding in United <strong>Water</strong> Services (UWS) for €1,108 million. The company currently<br />

serves 7.2 million people through 45 regulated utilities in 17 states in the USA, and had a turnover of<br />

€499 million in 2000 and €542 million in 2001. In 2002, a US$46 million water and sewerage contract<br />

was awarded by Laredo, Texas, covering 190,000 customers or some 700,000 people.<br />
