PART 1: 2005-2006 OVERVIEW
Water (RWE) are examining proposals for brackish water facilities, although these remain
politically contentious.
The size and scope of projects is growing
Not only is the market set to grow, but the size of facilities is increasing as is the tendency to
involve private sector funding and operation. The Independent Water and Power Project market
(IWPP) has emerged over the past decade as a way of financing new power and water
capacity, especially in the Middle East. IWPPs are now emerging across the USA, Europe and
Asia, including in countries that otherwise have no other private sector involvement in their
water services.
For private sector players, there are many opportunities: building and operating as part of a
IWPP consortium (VE, Suez and Bouygues for example), for providing specialist engineering
and allied services (Hyflux of Singapore and Ionics of the USA) or for operating dedicated
facilities, such as by Consolidated Water of the USA.
