PSP <strong>Water</strong><br />

‘Policy Principles and Implementation Guidelines for Private Sector Participation in Sustainable<br />

<strong>Water</strong> Supply and Sanitation Services’ was launched in April 2004, by the Swiss Agency for<br />

Development and Cooperation (SDC), the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO),<br />

and Swiss Re. PSP <strong>Water</strong> seeks to propose formal approaches for private sector participation<br />

(PSP) at the policy, operational and practitioner level, based on work being carried out since<br />

2002 (web site www.partnershipsforwater.net). The first drafts were published in April <strong>2005</strong>.<br />

Operators), Consumers International, Environmental Monitoring Group, Public Services<br />

International, RWE Thames <strong>Water</strong>, BPD and <strong>Water</strong>Aid. A scoping report has been published<br />

and a workshop held in Berlin in June 2004, decided that this project is to be taken further.<br />

Business Partners for Development<br />

BPD is British based, with a global membership. The <strong>Water</strong> and Sanitation Cluster covers water<br />

and wastewater issues. A Tri Sector Partnership approach developed in a 1998-2001 study,<br />

looking at the potential of business working with governments and civil society for promoting<br />

sustainable development. A series of five brief reports were published in 2002. BPD is<br />

concentrating on developing partnerships at the local level.<br />

The World Economic Forum<br />

The WEF’s <strong>Water</strong> Initiative was launched in June 2003. It covers three areas: The <strong>Water</strong> Project<br />

Exchange (joint projects between the private sector and other stakeholders); The <strong>Water</strong><br />

Practices Exchange (highlighting good corporate practice in water management) and; The<br />

<strong>Water</strong> Business Case (promoting market based instruments for water and watershed<br />

management).<br />

The Green Globe Network<br />

The Green Globe Network assists UK Government’s international sustainable development<br />

activities by providing advice and information, organising meetings and seminars, and by<br />

developing proposals for new policy initiatives. It was established in 1997 by the Foreign<br />

Secretary and is funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. It also has links with other<br />

government departments. The water and sanitation Millennium Development Goals were taken<br />

on as part of their 2003-04 work programmes. The Green Globe Network is run by the Green<br />

Alliance.<br />
