PART 1: 2005-2006 OVERVIEW
Taking a look at the corporate development of the sector through the number of companies identified
by the author over the past five editions of the Yearbook is, as of necessity, an impressionistic
exercise. It is nevertheless a useful one as it reflects those companies which are in the public domain.
Synthesis of the results
For our purposes, OECD countries are those of the EU and North America. Advanced developing
countries are chiefly Singapore, Chile and Saudi Arabia and developing countries cover other
economies such as Malaysia and Brazil.
1999/00 2000/01 2001/02 2002/03 2003/04 2004/05 2005/06
This list excludes Lydec (Morocco), five companies in France (RUAS, SOGEDO, STGS, Alteau and
Ternois Epuration), one in Poland (Aquarius) and six in the Russian Federation (RUS, RKI, CES-
Multyenergetika, Novogor-Prikamye, Rosvodokanal & Syzranvodokanal), which are mentioned in the
country entries but currently lack enough data to merit separate company entries. Lydec has its IPO in
2005, the Polish and Russian companies were identified in 2004-05, along with the French players,
excepting RUAS which has been identified since 1999.
The Italian market has been consolidated during 2004-05, in particular by ACEA and AMGA and this
process is set to continue into 2006, lead by Hera acquiring Meta.
When looking at the company entries and contract awards to date, there appears to be a shift away
from the global market leaders to more diverse and local management and financing solutions. These
entries highlight the notable development of activities in the sector by companies based in China,
