Croatia<br />

2000 Zagreb 26 year BOT 1 million sewage treatment<br />

This is the largest sewage treatment concession award in central and Eastern Europe to date,<br />

involving €270 million in capital spending. The project scope includes design, construction and<br />

operation of the wastewater treatment plant (1million PE) and the administration facilities,<br />

construction of the main collecting pipeline (9.8km) and coverage of main drainage canal (5.5km).<br />

The concession company, Zagrebacke otpadne vode d.o.o (ZOV), is formed by RWE Aqua (48.5%),<br />

WTE Wassertechnik GmbH (48.5%, see EVN, Austria) and the City of Zagreb (3%). Construction<br />

began in July 2002 and will be completed between 2004 (mechanical treatment) and 2007 (biological<br />

treatment).<br />

Poland<br />

2002 Gornicza 25 year concession 135,000 water & sewerage<br />

RWE acquired a 34% stake in PWiK, the municipal supplier for Dabrowa Gornicza in Silesia. The<br />

contract runs for 25 years. The partnership between RWE Aqua and the city of Dabrowa Gornicza is<br />

only the third (of totally five) privatisation project in the Polish water management. PWiK has a<br />

turnover of US$ 12 million pa and employs 220 staff.<br />

Berlinwasser International AG (BWI)<br />

BWB sought to enter international markets in 1994 and gained its first activities in 1997-98.<br />

Berlinwasser International, established as a separate legal entity in 2000, has nine projects in five<br />

countries with a total order backlog worth € 821 million (year-end 2004).<br />

BWI – China<br />

2003 Nanchang 20 year BOT 1.1 million wastewater customers<br />

Berlinwasser International has a BOT-contract to build a 330,000 m3 per day wastewater treatment<br />

plant in Nanchang, the capital of Jiangxi. BWI and its partner, the Third Construction & Engineering<br />

Co. Ltd of Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCGT) are developing the €36 million project with<br />

wholly Chinese project-financing. Construction began in January 2003 and the plant went operational<br />

in autumn 2004.<br />

2004 Hefei 23 year BOT 0.9 million wastewater customers<br />

A RMB480 million contract for taking over the operation of a 310,000 m3 per day wastewater<br />

treatment plant that was built by the municipality between 1998 and 2002.<br />

BWI – Albania<br />

2003 Four Albanian towns 5 year O&M 450,000 water & wastewater customers<br />

Berlinwasser International gained a five year €4 million contract to take over management of water<br />

supply and wastewater disposal in the Albanian towns of Durres, Fier, Lezhe and Saranda. The<br />

project is supported by €20 million in funding from the World Bank. Sewage treatment will be<br />

upgraded to secondary (biological) standards and water supplies will be improved from two to four<br />

hours daily to a 24 hour supply.<br />

2002 Elbasan 30 year Concession 100,000 water & wastewater customers<br />

Berlinwasser (97.5 %) and Rodeco Consulting (Germany) (2.5 %) operates Elber Sh.p.k., a 30 year<br />

concession for water supply and wastewater disposal in Elbasan, with 100,000 inhabitants. <strong>Water</strong> is<br />

supplied for four hours a day and will be improved to a 24 hour service.<br />
