(biological) standards and water supplies will be improved from two to four hours daily to a 24 hour<br />

supply.<br />

2002 Elbasan 30 year Concession 100,000 water & wastewater<br />

Berlinwasser (97.5 %) and Rodeco Consulting (Germany) (2.5 %) operates Elber Sh.p.k., a 30 year<br />

concession for water supply and wastewater disposal in Elbasan, with 100,000 inhabitants. <strong>Water</strong> is<br />

supplied for four hours a day and will be improved to a 24 hour service.<br />

Hungary<br />

1997 Hodmézövásarhely 25 year concession 50,000 sewerage<br />

Zsigmondy Bela Rt. manages the concession agreement with the city of Hodmézövásarhely. A<br />

wastewater treatment plant with a capacity of 30,000m³ per day has been upgraded to comply with the<br />

UWWTD.<br />

Azerbaijan<br />

2001 Imisli 10 year Lease Contract 50,000 water<br />

<strong>Water</strong>works Imisli JV Ltd, is a joint venture between BWI and the city of Imisli’s water company. The<br />

city’s water treatment works were rehabilitated and expanded in 2003, with provision rising from two<br />

hours a day to 15 along with a 57% tariff collection rate.<br />

Namibia<br />

2001 Windhoek 20 year operation 240,000 water & sewerage<br />

Limited water resources and rising water demand encouraged the city of Windhoek to build a new<br />

wastewater treatment plant using membrane technology, and to outsource the operation to a<br />

consortium comprising Veolia <strong>Water</strong>, Berlinwasser and VA Tech Wabag (Austria). The Goreangab<br />

plant is a first and unique example of recycling domestic sewerage water into potable water to face<br />

water scarcity problems and entered service in 2002. The turnover of Wingoc is approximately €2<br />

million pa, producing 21,000m³ of water per day, some 30% of the city's total water requirement. In<br />

addition, BWI has an O&M contract for the city of Swakopmund’s sewage treatment works, which have<br />

a capacity of 10,000m³ per day.<br />

Other contracts directly held by VE<br />

1995 Döbeln/Oschatz 20 year management 135,000 water and sewerage<br />

Oewa (46% held by VE, a JV with Veba Kraftwerk Ruhr AG until 1998) gained a contract for<br />

Döbeln/Oschatz in Saxony with a turnover of (DM17 million), serving 135,000 people.<br />

1999 Grimma 25 year concession 85,000 water and sewerage<br />

The concession covers 19 communes in Saxony, 85,000 being served with piped water and 45,000<br />

with sewerage. The contract is worth €153 million over its life. Oewa Wasser und Abwasser GmbH<br />

mainly operates in Saxony-Anhalt, holding 25 contracts, including 6 gained via the 1994 acquisition of<br />

Awatech.<br />

1999 Midewa Acquisition 400,000 water & sewerage<br />

In December 1999, activities in Saxony Anhalt were boosted by the acquisition of Midewa, which has<br />

a turnover of €56 million per annum. 400,000 are included for water services and 200,000 for<br />

sewerage. VE also has a 25 year O&M contract for sewerage services in the Hanover area, with a<br />

turnover of €15 million per annum.<br />
