…and companies that grow 31 PART 1: 2005-2006 OVERVIEW The industrial water and wastewater outsourcing sector is set to become markedly more active as major industrial groups consider how best to enter this market. Companies such as Siemens (Germany), BOC (UK), ITT (USA) and GE (USA) have made strategic acquisitions over the past three years in water technology or service companies. These companies have a reputation for seeking a prominent role in markets they chose to enter; earlier this year, GE announced that is aiming to reach US$10 billion in water-business sales over the next decade. Number of People Served by Country and Company Developments during 2004-05 32 PART 1: 2005-2006 OVERVIEW After the dramatic setbacks noted in 2003 and 2004, with contracts being handed back and a cooler corporate attitude towards seeking contracts in developing economies, 2005 has seen an upsurge in business in Europe and Asia, along with a more difficult operating climate in Latin America and Sub-Saharan Africa. Major PSP contract losses, January 2003 to October 2005 Major contract losses covering 3.55 million people have been identified in the year to date. This contrasts with contract losses covering 13.5 million people during 2004 and 4.83 million in 2003. The Belize contract ended when the Government purchased Biwater’s stake for an agreed fee. In the cases of Tanzania and Bolivia, the contracts ended due to political pressures. The Chinese contracts ended because of a law passed in 2002 outlawing fixed rates of return for foreign owned contracts. It is known that RWE sold its stake for a profit. Suez handed back the Puerto Rico contract (which has previously been handed back by VE) after being unable to renegotiate its terms and the Bogota wastewater treatment works contract was pulled in circumstances that still remain unclear.
