Utilities Development Co, (Ionics & United Utilities) will be responsible for the build-operate- transfer
deal. The project is expected to be worth more than US$1 billion over its life, and aims to produce
some 375,000 cubic metres of water per day in its first phase, with a design capacity for 600,000 m 3
per day. It involves US$415-450 million in capex. The National Bank of Kuwait (NBK) is arranging a
110 million Dinar (US$358 million) loan and Kharafi and Ionics are expected to put up the rest of the
funds. The facility’s capacity implies that it may be intended to serve the entire population of
1.9million. Construction work was compelted in May 2005, with the aim of entering service by
December 2005.
