Utilities Development Co, (Ionics & United Utilities) will be responsible for the build-operate- transfer<br />

deal. The project is expected to be worth more than US$1 billion over its life, and aims to produce<br />

some 375,000 cubic metres of water per day in its first phase, with a design capacity for 600,000 m 3<br />

per day. It involves US$415-450 million in capex. The National Bank of Kuwait (NBK) is arranging a<br />

110 million Dinar (US$358 million) loan and Kharafi and Ionics are expected to put up the rest of the<br />

funds. The facility’s capacity implies that it may be intended to serve the entire population of<br />

1.9million. Construction work was compelted in May <strong>2005</strong>, with the aim of entering service by<br />

December <strong>2005</strong>.<br />
