One O&M contract, operated by UWS. The Halifax contract, gained in 2002 was rescinded in 2003.<br />

In June 2004, a €80 million construction contract for Halifax was signed, with the municipality<br />

operating three wastewater treatment plants which will enter service between <strong>2006</strong> and 2008.<br />

Mexico<br />

Suez operates in Mexico through ASIM, a 50:50 JV with Peñoles (BAL Group). In July 2002, Ondeo<br />

acquired Azurix’s Mexican operations through ASIM for US$93 million. The five contracts acquired<br />

bring Suez’s population served in Mexico to 7.5million, along with US$70 million per annum in<br />

revenues.<br />

2004 San Luis Potosi 18 year BOT 400,000 sewage treatment<br />

This contract has a total value of €263 million, with a two year construction and 18 year operational<br />

phases. 57% of the 80,000m 3 per day of wastewater will be subject to primary treatment and used as<br />

agricultural water. The other 43% will be subjected to tertiary treatment and used for cooling a power<br />

station. The contract was awarded to Degrémont, Sumitomo (Japan) and Prodin (Mexico) in June<br />

2004.<br />

1994 Mexico City 10+5 year O&M 2.8 million water systems<br />

1999 Mexico City 5+5 year O&M 2.1 million water systems<br />

In 1994, IACMEX was awarded a 10 year O&M contract for water metering, billing and collections and<br />

water mains maintenance for the Central Federal District of Mexico City. Azurix acquired a 49%<br />

holding in Industrias del Agua de la Cuidad de Mexico (IACMEX) from Severn Trent in 1999. This is<br />

for the development of metering and water supply systems, as well as making 330,000 new<br />

connections. In October 2004, these contracts were extended for a further five years, and will<br />

generate €80 million in revenues over this period.<br />

1999 Puebla 20 year concession Sewage treatment<br />

2000 Culiacan 20 year concession Sewage treatment<br />

Ondeo Degrémont operates six sewage BOT's in Mexico, including the above contracts. The Puebla<br />

concession announced in October 1999 is for a sewage treatment works capable of handling<br />

13,000m 3 of effluents each hour. The Culiacan facility is situated in the Sinaloa state and has a<br />

capacity of 6,160m 3 per hour. There are two other municipal BOT's serving Juarez and Torreon, and<br />

two industrial BOTs based in Santa Cruz and Altamira.<br />

1993 Cancun 30 year concession 520,000 water and sewerage<br />

The Cancun resort area has a population of 430,000, which had grown to 520,000 by 2002 and is<br />

forecast to grow at 3% per annum to 2015. There are currently 78,000 connections. Approximately,<br />

4.3 million tourists visit the resort each year. 65% of the concession’s revenues currently come from<br />

hotels (with US dollar denominated revenues), with 27% from residential water provision and 8% from<br />

wastewater. Azurix acquired its stake in Desarollos Hidraulicos de Cancun (DHC) concession in 1999.<br />

The concession generates revenues of US$50 million per annum and is profitable.<br />
