Bulgaria<br />

1999 Sofia 25 year concession 1.3 million water and wastewater<br />

UUI and International <strong>Water</strong> were awarded the concession in December 1999. The winning bid was<br />

based on fees of US$152 million against US$239-273 million tendered by Suez and Berlin <strong>Water</strong> and<br />

US$66 million in capex in the first three years, against US$59-64 million by the same companies.<br />

US$200 million will be invested in the city’s infrastructure over the life of the concession. The contract<br />

is worth £700 million over its life. UU holds 60% of Sofiyska Voda.<br />

Australia<br />

UU serves a total of 500,000 people via 12 water treatment facilities and two industrial wastewater<br />

treatment projects. These have been carried out in both cases as a JV with Australia’s Transfield<br />

Group, with 50% of the equity held by UU Australia. UU has indicated that it is keen to acquire one or<br />

more of the Australian water and sewerage entities that are currently being mooted for privatisation.<br />

2004 Fleurieu Peninsula 20 year BOT 5,000 wastewater<br />

A A$32 million wastewater treatment plant for Victor Harbour in South Australia, designed to handle<br />

an average flow of 5 Ml/day. The facility enered service in mid <strong>2005</strong>. Victor Harbour is a tourist resort<br />

on the Fleurieu Peninsula, with a resident populatiomn of 5,000 and an average population of 20,000.<br />

2003 Coliban 10 + 5 year O&M 130,000 water & wastewater<br />

Campaspe Asaset Management is responsible for O&M for a number of municipalities in northern and<br />

central Victoria. This includes 22 water and 10 wastewater treatment plants.<br />

1993 Melbourne 25 year BOOT 300,000 water<br />

This was the first BOOT project in the Australian <strong>Water</strong> industry, involving the renovation of Yan Yean<br />

reservoir, the oldest in Victoria, particularly during summer months when demand is high. A new<br />

direct filtration plant has replaced existing basic treatment facilities and now has a capacity of<br />

155,000Ml/day. It can reach a population of over 300,000 and supply 100,000 of these people at any<br />

one time. After A$25 million in spending, the refurbished facility entered service in 1994.<br />

1995 Sydney 25 year BOOT 230,000 water<br />

The Build, Own, Operate, and Transfer (BOOT) contract was awarded in 1992 and the facility entered<br />

service in 1995. It involved the construction of a new water treatment works costing A$124 million.<br />

The plant provides a population of 230,000 people with up to 265Ml of water per day. After 25 years,<br />

Sydney water can either buy the facility or renegotiate another operations contract.<br />
