Research Problem<br />

My <strong>the</strong>sis will demonstrate a broad impact <strong>of</strong> <strong>Ta<strong>in</strong>o</strong> language <strong>and</strong> culture on <strong>the</strong><br />

languages <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Americas</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> European <strong>in</strong>vasion based on l<strong>in</strong>guistic evidence<br />

from first-h<strong>and</strong> accounts <strong>of</strong> explorers, <strong>in</strong>vaders, priests <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>digenous scribes <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

time <strong>of</strong> European arrival <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ent) had gone ext<strong>in</strong>ct. Chronicles such as <strong>the</strong><br />

writ<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> Dom<strong>in</strong>ican missionary Bar<strong>to</strong>lomé de Las Casas seem <strong>to</strong> place <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

disappearance with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first fifty years <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> conquest 1 . However, <strong>the</strong> abundant<br />

evidence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>corporation <strong>of</strong> <strong>Ta<strong>in</strong>o</strong> words <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> language used by <strong>the</strong> Spanish who<br />

<strong>in</strong>vaded Mexico overturns much <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> traditional narrative <strong>and</strong> has compelled me <strong>to</strong><br />
