nobles <strong>and</strong> govern<strong>in</strong>g class among <strong>Ta<strong>in</strong>o</strong> society.<br />
Never<strong>the</strong>less, this mention <strong>of</strong> nyta<strong>in</strong>o by de Las Casas is <strong>the</strong> first mention <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
word that conta<strong>in</strong>s <strong>the</strong> suffix by which <strong>the</strong> <strong>Ta<strong>in</strong>o</strong> are go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> be known <strong>in</strong> all <strong>the</strong><br />
chronicles <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> conquest. Composed <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> prefix ní > ‘important’ <strong>and</strong> ‘<strong>the</strong>’, this term<br />
is a fasc<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g w<strong>in</strong>dow <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Ta<strong>in</strong>o</strong> social perception. It seems that by identify<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />
noble class as nitayní > ‘<strong>the</strong> important Ta<strong>in</strong>í’ <strong>the</strong>y were mak<strong>in</strong>g a differentiation <strong>of</strong><br />
status between <strong>the</strong>m <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> population such as <strong>the</strong> behique <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
naboria, which is go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> be analyzed fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sequence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> text.<br />
His<strong>to</strong>rically speak<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> word cacique was one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first <strong>Ta<strong>in</strong>o</strong> words <strong>to</strong> be<br />
lexicalized <strong>in</strong> a text written <strong>in</strong> Lat<strong>in</strong> as it was <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> Peter Martyr’s 1511 De Orbe<br />

In this description <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al text we come across three <strong>Ta<strong>in</strong>o</strong> words used as<br />
part <strong>of</strong> a new culture that could no longer deny its mixture <strong>and</strong> evolution. In <strong>the</strong> text, we<br />
can observe <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> declension <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lat<strong>in</strong> accusative s<strong>in</strong>gular -icum added as<br />
modify<strong>in</strong>g suffix <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Ta<strong>in</strong>o</strong> cacique. It is also crucial <strong>to</strong> note that <strong>in</strong> this quote Peter<br />
Martyr is referr<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> a l<strong>in</strong>k between <strong>the</strong> cacique <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> xCemí > ‘deity’, which seem <strong>to</strong><br />
support <strong>the</strong> argument for a possible ceremonial connection between <strong>the</strong> cacique <strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> gods. However, a vital element <strong>to</strong> note about this Lat<strong>in</strong> lexicalization, is <strong>the</strong> fact that<br />
