The next word <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sequence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> text is nagua > ‘taparrabo (Spa.)’ ><br />
‘lo<strong>in</strong>cloth’. This word is <strong>of</strong> extreme significance, because like its counterpart canoa it<br />
quickly became <strong>in</strong>tegrated <strong>and</strong> adopted by <strong>the</strong> people <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ental l<strong>and</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
languages <strong>and</strong> dialects. To this day, nagua or enagua is used as a synonym <strong>of</strong> skirt 99<br />
across most Spanish speak<strong>in</strong>g countries.<br />
However, a significant element <strong>to</strong> observe <strong>in</strong> Diaz del Castillo’s note is <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong><br />
