Con frutas de siguapas y macaguas<br />

Y muchas pitajayas olorosas 111 ;<br />

In <strong>the</strong> poem above we are yet aga<strong>in</strong> presented with an early colonial Spanish<br />

<strong>in</strong>tertw<strong>in</strong>ed with <strong>Ta<strong>in</strong>o</strong> words, traditions <strong>and</strong> ritualistic symbolism. Words like naguas,<br />

siguapas, pitahayas <strong>and</strong> macaguas seem <strong>to</strong> be part <strong>of</strong> a new bicultural tradition <strong>in</strong><br />

process <strong>of</strong> development.<br />

CHAPTER 3 | THE TIERRA FIRME OR MAINLAND<br />

<strong>From</strong> this po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> Diaz del Castillo’s narrative we encounter <strong>the</strong> new cultural <strong>and</strong><br />

l<strong>in</strong>guistic reality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> people <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ental l<strong>and</strong>s. Prior <strong>to</strong> this moment, most<br />

descriptions about <strong>the</strong> native cultures <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Americas</strong> were related <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Ta<strong>in</strong>o</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir relatives along <strong>the</strong> Caribbean, Darién, <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r scattered k<strong>in</strong>gdoms <strong>in</strong> Central<br />

America. However, it is <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>vasion <strong>of</strong> New Spa<strong>in</strong> that will mark <strong>the</strong> cusp <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spanish<br />

empire <strong>and</strong> solidify its grasp over <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ent. The <strong>Ta<strong>in</strong>o</strong> words<br />

encountered <strong>in</strong> this section <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> text (given <strong>the</strong> significance <strong>of</strong> this event) were part <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> a new mestizo culture that became <strong>the</strong> dom<strong>in</strong>ant culture <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Americas</strong>. It is important <strong>to</strong> note that this happened <strong>in</strong> large measure because 90% <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>digenous population <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Americas</strong> was wiped out by disease <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first century<br />

after European contact. However, what happened <strong>in</strong> New Spa<strong>in</strong> did not stay <strong>the</strong>re. It<br />

went across <strong>the</strong> whole cont<strong>in</strong>ent <strong>and</strong> beyond. In this chapter we are go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ue<br />

with our ma<strong>in</strong> task <strong>of</strong> identify<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Ta<strong>in</strong>o</strong> words <strong>and</strong> <strong>Ta<strong>in</strong>o</strong> related elements <strong>of</strong> culture,<br />
