“Spare me your pity, detective. I’m too tired for that.” After one last look

at him, my head turned towards the house.

His jaw clenched and just like that I knew he was still the detective

Brooks I knew and tolerated. “I’m not here to interrogate you—“

“Well that’s a first.” I snapped as I stared in the distance.

“I think you’ve been through enough as it is, but don’t make me change my

mind and take you to the station tonight. ” he asserts, his tone making me

quiver before

I could help myself. Immediately, my eyes turned back to him. That’s just

the kind of man he was; he exuded dominance, and he knew it.

“Do you have anywhere to go for the night? A friend’s house? Family?”

He asked

A dark chuckle came out of me; “You know I don’t have friends and my

only family is six feet under, detective. So unless you can bring people back

from the dead, no, we don’t have anywhere to go tonight. But don’t worry,

we’ll book a hotel.” I shrugged, furiously wiping at my tears.

Maddox went silent for a beat, just staring at me. He lifted his hand, like

he was going to touch me, before he abandoned the idea and let it fall back to

his side. But I could have sworn, at that moment, I could feel my cheek tingle,

like his touch had truly been on it. I swallowed silently, my eyes boring into

his.

He seemed so out of sorts, nothing like I’d ever seen him before, it

showed how truly shaken up he was which got me thinking. Being a small

town cop, it was probably the first time he was dealing with a triple

homicide, and a really messy one at that.

Flashes of blood splattering on the walls flooded my brain and I really

wanted to slam my head against something to make them go away. But I
