“What is going on here?” Both me and Valentina turned our head towards

the hallway leading to our rooms, where Sofia stood, rubbing the sleep off

her eyes. I stopped tickling the little girl in my arms and instead held her up

with one arm. She put her hand on my head, steadying herself.

“Noooo!” She screamed as soon as she saw her sister eyeing us

suspiciously. “You can’t be here, go back, go back, Dada!”

“Yeah, Dada, go back!” I liked the cute nickname Valentina gave her

sister.

I never really bothered asking what it meant, figuring it was probably a

Spanish endearment she had shortened. “We’re working on something right

now and you can’t be here. Right, pretty girl?” I looked at her and she

nodded solemnly.

“Right.”

Sofia looked amused as she looked at her sister and me, clearly ganging

up on her.

“O-kay. You’re not being weird at all. I’m going back to sleep, call me

when you finish the cake.” She turned around and looked at us above her

shoulder and through her lashes. She was so fucking hot.

“Will do!” Valentina answered cheerfully and I looked at her, eyes wide.

She understood her mistake and gasped, putting both of her hands on her

mouth. My little drama queen.

“Aha! I knew it. I can see Mama’s old book on the counter from here.”

Dammit, she was good.

“You’re no fun!” Valentina frowned, crossing her arms on her chest.

“Hey, it’s fine. She doesn’t know what recipe we’re making, we can still

surprise her.” I tried to pacify her.
