We finally stopped in front of a door with a gold plate written “Conan

Michaels” on it. I shared a look with Adam that told me the older man

thought the same as me: Conan sure seemed to have settled well into his new

position as a member of the city council.

He was the youngest there, but from what I heard, his peers really liked

him. He even seemed to have found himself a new mentor in Lex Dunavan.

He was a creepy old dude who was pushing ninety and honestly had no

business deciding the future of so many people when he looked three seconds

away from death.

Blondie knocked and Conan’s voice resonated through the door. My jaw

set just hearing him. I still hadn’t forgotten how Sofia lied to me to protect

him the day of the fire. I had a feeling these two had history but I didn’t know

how to look into it or prove it. I didn’t want to ask Sofia directly because she

clearly wasn’t feeling up to talk about it and pushing her wouldn’t be a good

idea.

As soon as his secretary opened the door and Conan saw us, he looked

pissed. Closing down his laptop, he straightened up in his chair.

“Mr Michaels, Detective Brooks and Detective A—”

“I’ll take it from here, Barbra, you can go back to your desk.” Barbra

clamped her mouth shut and nodded, hightailing it out of there as fast as she

could. All the while, Conan’s eyes stayed glued on us.

Well, actually, it’s me this cunt was glaring at.

Not waiting for an invite and wanting to piss him off further, I stalked

around his office, looking at the books on his shelves and the pictures on his

walls.

There were several of him and the mayor, but my eyes were drawn to one

picture in particular. One where he stood with the Raymond family, grinning

and looking like he fucking belonged there.
