Piersons was there, briefcase in one hand, his coat hanging from his arm,

while the other hand held his briefcase. He stared at us curiously, one

eyebrow drawn up.

“Do you finally have answers for your case or are you turning it into the

cold cases?”

I opened my mouth to speak, but my words wouldn’t come out. This was

no doubt one of the hardest things I’d ever had to do, but I knew it was worth

it. I took a deep breath and finally said what I came here to say.

“I am handing in my two weeks notice, sir. I’m resigning.”

The shock on his face was clearly visible, he and Adam shared a look, I

could see my partner— or, well, ex-partner clench his jaw.

“I think it's the right thing to do after I failed at finding out what happened

that night.” I lied.

More like I fell in love with the killer I was tracking down and refused to

turn her in.

I couldn’t, in all good conscience, continue working here. I used to love

my job but this case changed everything. This case made me look at the

people surrounding me with a different eye. I would have never suspected

Jack and Marcella Raymond to be the monsters they were, yet look at them.

And the truth was, we worked for people like Jack Raymond.

Important people with enough money to shut anyone up had they needed

to.

Chief Piersons knew Raymond personally, they golfed together, had

dinner together. Maybe he knew what Jack was really like, maybe he was the

same as him.

I think what happened yesterday was proof enough that you never truly

knew anyone.
